The hatchling nods off that way, curled close to the fire, little wings fluttering occasionally in his sleep. Mariposa never thought of being a mother. It never occurred to her, and after meeting Amichai – after falling in love, after her whole world shifted just so – she never wanted for anything more. Now, looking at the rise and fall of the tiny veilspun’s flank, she realises her mistake. Mariposa has never wanted for much. It is only ever in the having – having freedom from the Order, having a mate to share her life with – that she knows her own heart. Now, with this little creature in her care, she’s learned that heart a bit better. She looks up, across the fire, to where her first love sits. They have spent a hundred nights like this, sharing songs and stories in the safety of the dark. Amichai’s expression is inscrutable, her gaze fixed on their new addition. “He doesn’t have anyone else,” Mariposa says, trusting her mate to hear the rest. |

Amichai nods, but the trepidation in her eyes doesn’t abate. Mariposa settles in to wait. Silence is necessary sometimes. “I don’t want us to change,” Amichai says at last, her words barely a whisper. “I like us as we are. I don’t want that to change.” Mariposa’s heart wobbles in her chest. “I don’t either. But, sometimes... things change anyway. And we” – she paused, her next words lodged in her throat, sticky with an ages-old hurt – “we change too. All we can do is make sure we’re better for it.” “Our own path,” Amichai says softly, stretching out a wing. Mariposa curls in close, winter-thick fur brushing freshly-shed scales. “Our own path,” she agrees. They sit before the fire, and watch the next great change of their life sleep. |
