A young man with hair the color of a robin’s egg and a sweet, round face that does little to quell the eeriness of his disposition. The air around him seems to roar like a cicada on a muggy summer day, and his eyes… his eyes. Seeing yourself reflected in all those ruby-colored facets feels like a warning, though you’re not sure what it’s a warning of. If it’s any comfort, he has no interest in you. He’s much more fixated on the chattering of insects somewhere behind you. As a child, Lucanus Foxwatcher was, in a word, elusive. His parent would lose track of him often, and find in the strangest of places; underneath the shed, halfway up a tree in the depths of the woods, skulking by the bank of a creek, his body half-sunken in the marshy earth. When asked what he was doing, he would cryptically answer “they told me to come here, so here I am.” They didn’t learn until much later that he had inherited his mother’s gift for talking to insects. However, unlike his mother, he could not understand the soft, melodic buzzing of bees and wasps. No, young Luca understood the chittering voices of beetles. In his adulthood, he travels the realm, seeking out—you guessed it—more beetles, looking to expand his worldview with the stories they tell him. The ones who wish to are free to join him, to either return to his home and the hordes of other beetles he has befriended or accompany him as he follows distant and unfamiliar patterns of clicking. Children who are brought up on Foxwatcher farm are hard to spook. Between Aitana’s stories of monster hunting and Trigona’s ability to communicate with insects and nature spirits, their children often develop a fascination with the occult. This interest is only compounded by Antaram, the strange, bone-shrouded hunter that rests in their loft from time to time, bringing with them all manner of magical items and unnerving tales. Foxwatcher children are taught from a young age the ways of witchcraft, binding and banishing and sometimes even killing, when the situation calls for it. They have seen the shadows stir at dusk, watched the nameless things that haunt this realm pace the edges of the wards carefully erected and layered by their mothers. When the time finally comes for them to leave the homestead, they bring with them two things. The first is a small talisman of bone, bean pods and insect wings, meant to remind them of home. The second is a formidable knowledge of the craft and all that it entails. Come hell or high water, they will make a fine addition to any clan.
