Biography

Hippocamp Spines
ZENITH
[ biting • wind ]

child of the meeting winds | independent, protective, untrusting

Zenith was born of the union between the South Wind and North Wind, hatched in the unforgiving chill of the Southern Icefields. He grew up in the ruins of an ancient fortress crowned in snow — a child's playground, unearthing relics and digging tunnels between the walls. Loneliness became his castle. His mother was largely absent, a flickering, masked presence who only appeared to bring her children fish and a single night of warmth, then was gone again. Their father would often linger longer to teach them how to stretch their wings and catch the scorpions that lived beneath rocks. Still, it was clear from the beginning that he and his sibling would choose whether to perish or find their own life in the winds. The gentle lights that appeared at night in the mountain's valley promised humanity, sanctuary, and warmth, though the frigid jaws of the mountains beckoned just as strongly with ferocity, mystery, and an unyielding heart.

The younger of the two siblings, Zenith always felt drawn by wild beasts that ventured the mountain peaks. Time had taught them how to step carefully across the crags and rocks, taught them when best to bare their fangs and when best to bow. That same primordial strength dwelled deep in Zenith's heart. It was honed by the ghosts of his parents whose silence strengthened Zenith beyond a cradle's coddling, and the wolves and elk who surrounded their fortress recognized it in him. He followed in their footsteps and they would tilt their bestial heads back at him, beckoning, wordlessly promising that he was one of them. Yet he balked, and he could not say why, until the day he met a stranger who wore a face like his own. The dragon had stolen high in the snows and across his back carried a felled elf calf. In that instant, all of his mother's teachings crystalized his heart. Zenith chased the thief back down the mountain's face, roaring an avenger's promise with such bitterness it surprised even him.

And yet, as their songs began to sing of an icy-footed titan guarding the mountain peaks from wanderers, he thrived.
