Proteus > Guardian/Emperor > Lives in the Falgem Bastille Location |
|
Being one of the first of your mother's new children isn't at all what the lore books would have one believe. Meant to be more than their abomination predecessors, the imperials, pearlcatchers were meant to make Lightweaver proud and avoid any... messy zombification post-mortem. Their mother's favorite, perfect, creations. Well... there's a reason protypes exist. Prior to his own death, Proteus would've said his deity had succeeded. In its early stages still, the breed had spread throughout Sornieth and he'd been born within the Fire Flight. His early life was well and normal. Healthy and happy as a hatchling, and more than eager to grow up and see his species' origin flight. The young dragon would wait impatiently for the day were he was old enough to travel on his own. When that day came, Proteus set off for Light with a map and a few supplies in hand. Not once did he look back, though maybe he would've had he known the fate that awaited him. His next mistake was becoming friends with two other pearlcatchers visiting from other flights. A golden scaled pearlcatcher who's beauty mirrored Lightweaver's own brilliant scales and a gentle earthy pearlcatcher who packed his pearl with scholarly memories. The trio would explore the flight together, never suspecting that each trip to a new location was counting down to their last until it was too late. Proteus was the first to hear the ruins start to crumble. The three tried to flee but wings tore and scales were crushed beneath the ancient building's collapse. For a while, Proteus wasn't sure he existed. Time passed overhead. The pearlcatcher would eventually wake from his slumber. His body felt... strange. Lifting his head, he saw his pearl and grabbed it. As he did, a dark brown tail of his Earth flight friend shifted in time with his movements. Odd... And as he thought about it, he felt... heavy. Proteus stretched his torn wings only to find a familiar but dulled sickly golden wing stretch with it. The owner's head lifted into his line of sight and he felt sick. This wasn't supposed to happen. They were Lightweaver's perfected creations! How had this occurred? Was he—were the three of them—defective? Proteus scrambled and clawed his way from their tomb, stumbling into the light to see the real damage. Bone showed in his sickly gold friend's lower jaw and her wings and a hind leg had merged into his own body. A few steps and he could feel her pearl roll around his ribs a little. Meanwhile, his Earth flight friend's tail had joined his, curled tightly over a broken pearl while they twisted and turned their blind skull in an attempt to look around. He didn't hear their thoughts. Were they like him? Or was he the only one left in this mutated body? He didn't want to be alone but he hoped his friends weren't trapped like this with him even more. Proteus nervously set off, hiding and gradually gathering apparel to wrap his wounds and flowers to cover his scent—his Earth Flight friend loved those. For a time, he lurked in shadows and caught up with the world. It seemed his species were improved from imperials. He was just... the unlucky one, or few, who hadn't been created perfectly just yet. Proteus was eventually discovered by a demi-goddess, Sanctus. The regal pearlcatcher took him into the Falgem Bastille despite his imperfections. He's more than willing to help defend the location—his home—from any threats. The current biggest one being an emperor of all things! Was Luminax what woke him from his own slumber? Being around during times when deities fought off emperors, Proteus could use his knowledge to help keep the beast from finding them. And... perhaps... he wasn't defective. A small sliver of his mind wonders if Lightweaver brought him back like this for a reason. Fight an emperor with an emperor, if he could call himself one. His mind was just as sharp as the day he'd died. He couldn't eat, but even looking like a monster he was superior to Lightweaver's shunned creations. |
