Aegis.
↠ The simple pleasures

"And now was acknowledged the presence of the Red Death. He had come like a thief in the night. And one by one dropped the revellers in the blood-bedewed halls of their revel, and died each in the despairing posture of his fall..."

He had always been somewhat simple. It just couldn’t be helped, what was to be expected from a worker’s kid after all. Truth be told, before he came here, in this white and blue house at the port, he couldn’t even properly read or write. Everything he memorized - oftentimes falsely - only to forget it the next moment. Must have been the whacks on his head, he jokes but whenever he does so, he can see the curve of Eurydice’s mouth turn downwards. Like he’d tasted something vile again and every time he’d apologize, while thinking back on how he forgot about his boss’ being blind. And how he let him bite in that rotten apple.

None of this mattered, because in the end, he had arrived here many years ago. How many? Ten? Maybe twenty, he would need to ask Eurydice about it again, some time when the Teahouse isn’t full to the brim with music, clients and the scent of baked goods. Oh, baking was one of the fun parts of his job, besides cooking tea. Every server had a speciality, a special tea and sort of snack that went along with it. Eurydice had this idea and system ever since opening the Teahouse - at least that’s what everyone says - and keeps proclaiming that this offers a great variety and flexibility. Except for Aegis, that is. He’s always there, always working. Herbal tea is simple, easy and always in demand, so are his cookies. Sesame, with honey for sweetness or grains of salt and a hint of pepper for spiced tastes.

Bitter, sweet, salty. Basic tastes that can’t go wrong but apparently no one can do them quite like Aegis either. So he always works, everyday. Sometimes he’s just in the kitchen in the back, preparing a new batch of cookies all day. Other times he can’t keep up with the demands of refills. Usually that happens around the time sailors come back from their voyages. They bring coughs and fevers with them, rodents and treasures, so people drink bitter herbs and nibble on sweet or savory snacks. Aegis doesn’t mind.

He doesn’t mind, because in the back of Eurydice’s home, in the backyard of the Teahouse, is his own home. When he was taken in, Eurydice made a joke out of tearing down the old wood shack in favor of building more rooms. But Aegis begged him not to. He didn’t need a fancy room, in fact, the luxury would only make it hard to enjoy himself. Instead, he took the old shack. First he cleaned it out, old, rotten wood and rusty tools, cobwebs and abandoned bird nests. Between tending to the Teahouse’s own gardens and brewing, serving, he also climbed the leaky roof, tiled it new with reed and tar. The old fashioned way, Eurydice commented when he caught the reek of tar in the air. That’s the good thing about the Capital. It’s white nights might be a bit foggy, but you’d never need to light a single lantern.

But not all months were so rosy and golden for the Teahouse. Aegis noticed it when Eurydice had to send servers home because the tables remained empty. Or when he spent all morning cleaning up glass from their shattered windows. And let’s not forget the dead birds someone kept placing at their doorstep. The longer this stretched on, the angier Eurydice became. At one point, he even made everyone play music and danced on the stage, covered only in silks. It worked, somewhat. People came and watched but then they said something, they reached out and Eurydice became even angier. He threw them out again, cursing and spitting, not taking their coins. Aegis didn’t understand then. He still doesn’t, like so many things.

Those people wanted their pound of flesh in exchange for coin., one of the older workers told him later. A pound of flesh for coins, there were many names for this but Aegis got the base of it. Eurydice hated this, refused this. But wasn’t the Teahouse his home? Why didn’t he want to save it?
He hadn’t planned to do this exchange. It just happened out of a joke and soon enough Clients came back, certainly not because he gave away his meat, but they were back. And he kept offering, whenever Eurydice was away or served at the other end of the room or danced on the stage. The little extra could be used for restocking that which Eurydice’ lover couldn’t bring back with his ship. Or he bought things for his little, ramshackle home. Like a new sheep fur rug, woolen blankets. Two cups out of clay and plates of wood.

Aegis thought himself content, really, it was fine. Easy, simple life. Every day following a set rhythm and sometimes only broken because he watched Eurydice in his lover’s arm, whispering, lips curled up in a blinding smile. The other seemed so happy too, which made Aegis wonder if he got that one day too. Or if he was too simple for anyone.

It was out of worry, pure and genuine worry that Aegis told the pirate about the stones through their windows and the dead birds. He asked for advice, more than anything. Certainly didn’t expect him to grow so angry, same for Eurydice. The yelling made his ear ring even days later. Ever since that day, a man appeared in the Teahouse. He glared and grunted at the servers, never touched the sweet or expensive teas served. Even the cakes and snacks remained untouched. But as Eurydice never confronted the man or even bothered to acknowledge his presence, Aegis became the only one still trying.

Day after day he came to the man’s table, pouring bitter herbal tea and placed down a small plate of sesame cookies. The stranger never touched them, until he saw Aegis selling what Eurydice had forbidden. A pound of meat for a handful of coins. Suddenly, the man became interested. Looking back, Aegis had been lucky to never have gotten into trouble with this. The few coins wouldn't even have covered the cost of balm, not to mention a priest. But on the other hand, he got to witness the man turn into Algrenir, the friend. And then the strangely interested. And finally, it was just Algrenir, with sleep still clinging to his lashes, sitting on the wobbly stools in Aegir’s tiny home.

He talks about age and old
adventures like his life is over
already. Aegis doesn't get why,
they're alive now, doesn't he
see? Maybe another day in
sunlight and under a white
night would do him good.
Maybe its time for another
type of adventure. One called
love.
