Biography
__._ |
People kept looking at her with those hopeful eyes. They expected and expected, placed their hopes on her and when she refused to dance to their tunes, they became bitter, cried or lashed out. She never understood their desire to place everything on a single person. Why bind oneself to a lover that would just leave in the end? If not by their own choosing then by death coming to claim them. It was simply the way life went, take what you need, don’t waste thoughts about the rest. Far too soon it would wither away again, left behind forgotten and gone for good. This was true especially in connection with the wandering people. With nomads and their caravans of wagons, moving from one city to the next, never overstaying their welcome. She remembers growing up on the back of one of those fabric covered wagons, watching her mother’s broad back as she steered the horses to stick to the road of her choosing. Life was neither easy nor hard, it simply was. With no father in sight, the group as a whole filled in the void in her heart or rather, they tried to. But in the end, no one stayed persistently for her to get attached to, even her mother was more busy keeping everything going than to spend time with her daughter. Work your hands bloody and maybe you get a pat on the head, laze around and be prepared to go ignored, sometimes even hungry as no work meant no food either. Of course, she was no lazy girl, yet she failed to see the virtue in genuine, sincere work when she could just as easily take what she needed. Which was exactly what she did. She took her mother’s stash of hard earned coins, she took the best horse of the caravan, despite it not belonging to her. And she left, not a single word of goodbye or good luck. She left the same way she arrived, unnoticed and like a thief in the night. On her own, life became even harder than before, she pawned the horse off when it started to flag, she picked pockets wherever the opportunity presented itself to her as sincere, genuine work might have been good for the soul yet it failed to fill a hungry stomach. It was by mere accident that she skittered down the slope of trickery and greyness of the law into all out crime. Never one to wave around a weapon and pressure people to do her bidding, she was far better with her tongue, charming her opponents and making them momentarily allies. Of course, that never lasted long and before they knew what was happening, she happened to place the right word in the wrong set of ears, watched with impish glee as her now useless helpers were dragged off by the law. This way she earned a reputation, earned something akin to respect but never a caravan of her own. People knew better by now than to try to bind themselves to her. Wearing her colors brought nothing but a laugh as she abandoned whoever tried to impress her. Of course after robbing them blind first. The Undying Empire was just another stop on the great trail she lapsed with her wagon. Sometimes with company, sometimes without, either way, she knew what she wanted and a partner was not on that list. Within Sides of Coin however, she learnt quickly of the potential business waiting, rotting unnoticed between dust and poverty. The poor would give everything just to get outside the city’s walls. Just as some people would offer everything just to get inside the city’s towering, thorn covered walls. So if one had some coin to offer, she would not say no to letting them ride between boxes and spices at the back of her wagon. Just don’t expect loyalty or any kind of lasting comradery. | ___ |
