Biography
|
From the Inaugural Eruption of their family, after three powerful beings, born to Crack, Roil, and Scorch the land and the folds of magma beneath, slumped down in exhaustion. After the sputtering vents simmered down to steam, after hateful billows of ash drifted away in a daze, after oozing rivers of blistering molten rock cooled to bulbous stretches of bitter slab. After the Inauguration—embers remained. From a nest of orange coals, wings and a tail slowly unfurled, and at last its head rose, and blinked awake. Looking about, she saw her fellow creations slumbering amongst charred, broken crumbles of the crust and laying in half-solidified pools of lava. Gathering a bed of coals close against herself, she settled down to wait. Inglenook doesn't engage in battles with the s e e t h e above-mantle, as her viscous, goopy form doesn't permit her to leave magma or lava for long. She follows her family up to the crust with eruptions, then sits back and waits for the fight to finish. Usually, she spends the time fashioning small floating vessels so she and her family may more easily move about the new pools and rivers of lava that form following eruptions. Within the mantle, Inglenook's body melds completely with the whole of the magma, her consciousness stretching out for miles in the coordinate of her choosing. She's the family's best navigator below-crust, with an instinct for locating both s e e t h e and eruption sites, and so leads the charge in mantle hunts. Though she is most mobile in the mantle, her favorite times are actually during the weeks after battles spent above-mantle. She enjoys the period of rest and idleness the family gets atop her lava skiffs. Lulls between events. A respite from the singular purpose they were forged for. While her family is often exhausted of their strength by the battle and need simply rest, Inglenook herself is active and lively. She goes fishing for the seedling s e e t h e left behind in the lava streams, scuttling her small craft from pond to pond and either drawing the seedlings up with a line or diving down to capture them with claws and teeth. She takes the spoils back to the others, and they all share a feast of the delicious catch that sustains their existence. |
