OVERVIEW:
Too observant. Far too aware. Problem is, you never think you’re walking into a cautionary tale until you’re already living in it.

Nevada isn’t… great. At least it’s no Goldensparc. It’s no Cinderslag. It’s not the lunar cities of Wind. It’s worth defending, in some way. Or maybe that’s what you tell yourself. It’s been too long. Even if it was once a lie, you believe it now.

Sometimes, you’re a college student fresh out of Nexus City. Sometimes, the leylines are fractured and the sun is dead and there is a murderer on the loose. Sometimes, all you can do is follow the posters to the nearest recruitment office and join yet another one of those ubiquitous agencies.

Sometimes, you realize, too quickly, that none of it makes sense. They should be dealing in information, not soldiers. They should be focused on mobility, not building a network of outposts. They should have caught Hank by now; there is only so much desert to hide in, and he isn’t even hiding.

Sometimes, you find a dead dragon in the hallway. He’s an agent, like you. He’s a nocturne, not like you. His wings are ripped off. He is nailed to the wall. Someone has written, in thick black letters—
DISSENTER BE DAMNED.

Sometimes, just sometimes, you remember to ignore it all.
