When all of his other siblings hatched.. Umbriel had not. When his parents carefully cracked open his egg for him, they caught the glance of a dying, deformed pearlcatcher hatchling. One that was twisted and ugly, one that would never survive. His father wailed in agony and grief, and his mother had looked at him with a sightless horror on her face. Even in such a state, he could hear the world around him as whispers, and barely peek from the crack in his eggshell. Then, a voice whispered to him, a voice that only he and his mother could hear. It was so much louder than everything else around him, yet is had been quiet, and soft. It was aware he could hear it. "He will live. But at a cost, there is only so much I can do with so little..." Everything after was a haze. Later in his life, his mother had described to him how a blinding cloud of magic had emanated from her crystal orb, and surrounded his egg for only a few moments. When the cloud cleared.. Orion and Cassiopeia were met with their three normal pearlcatcher hatchlings, and a singular tiny spiral covered in pearly white feathers. The Otherworldly Being had taken him and twisted the sickly body, and reshaped it into something new, mending it in the process. Whatever flesh that couldn't be mended had been covered in fresh feathers, a gift of good faith. After this, the hatchling was named Umbriel, in honor of one of Uranus's moons. Life went on, and as he grew, more and more fluffy white wings sprouted from his body. Even with otherworldly intervention, Umbriel was still frail, and capable of snapping his bones at the slightest impact. His parents rarely allowed him to rough house with his siblings, or play for that matter. And all the while.. His own siblings became increasingly weary of him, and avoided him when they could. He was the Strange One. The one that constantly coughed and passed out suddenly. The one that had taken the most attention from their doting parents... The one that dove into magical research and the occult. On lonely days, it was his only and favorite pass time. As few books there were in Moonhollow's local library, there were more than hundreds in his family's home. Everyday and night, he would read everything he could get his claws on. He became an expert in odd magicks. His siblings were jealous no matter what he did. He wept when the day to leave Moonhollow arrived, and his siblings went to join the Shadowbinder's Exalted instead of following the Being that had saved his life. His siblings turned their back on the family. Perhaps they had become scared of the Being after they had seen what had become of Umbriel... Or perhaps they were envious of not gaining such gifts as Umbriel. The reasoning isn't known. What is known, however, is that Umbriel feels incredibly guilty for letting his siblings fall to the Shadowbinder's whispers. He now lives his life in constant servitude to the Otherworldly Being, completing each and every task to utter perfection and nothing else. He wishes to make up for what his three siblings had failed to do. It is a stressful job, but not an unthankful one. The Being has given him two pets over his servitude, a small black cat and a larger magpie sphynx. He has jokingly named them "One" and "Two" respectively. Umbriel takes on the burden so that when the fateful day arrives.. His three nest mates will have a chance to be spared. Although that is his main goal, Umbriel was lucky to find a mate that almost matched him to T. Like others who eventually join Moonhollow, she had wandered in one day, confused and curious. He was nervous at first, seeing that she was bigger and physically stronger than him, and looked equally as ferocious... He could even tell which minor religion she followed, based on her attire of animals skulls and rough silks. But a small voice in his head told him to approach her. It was then he had learned that she was almost as well-informed as him when it came to religions and magic, and she turned out to be kinder than what was reportedly normal for the tribals that mostly followed her home's religion. He fell head over heels, and the two became a quick match. She was quite open to new religions, and so she adopted the beliefs of his family. Ever since, Umbriel has been happier than he has ever been in his life. Hatchlings born from Skathi and Umbriel have a chance to inherit a great connection to magic and the unknown. While Umbriel is never as around as much as he wishes he was, Skathi is a loving and devoted mother that more than makes up for Umbriel's shortcomings. Strong ideals concerning the Otherworldly Being's steadily growing power are common belief among hatchlings of this pair. This Being shall save them all from the callous hands of the Deities, or so has been endlessly preached to them by Skathi and Umbriel. |
