Cordeilla froze. Her claws closed around stale air.
Oh no. Oh no, no no no!
"Merlyn!", she called out into the pitch black air. Her voice echoed away, bursting into a thousand fractals, turning into a mockery of repercussion and unbearable noise. She winced. Dropping to the ground, she began frantically feeling the cold stone floor for the thin thread.
She didn't find anything.
The green gaoler swallowed audibly, even a sound as little as this immediately broken into myriads of echoes by the dark. With a start, she realized she didn't know which direction she was facing any more. Her heartbeat pulsed in her ears as she, delicately, reached for her waist and the piece of thread that was supposed to be bound to her armour there...
And breathed a sigh of relief as her claws closed around it.
Cordeilla's paws started feeling unbearably hot as she crawled back hastily, so did her face. The darkness and the stale air seemed to press down on her with all the weight they had above them, all of sudden. Breaths became shallow, turned into gasps, while her movements grew shaky.
It was an eternity until her eyes started recognizing vague shadows again. Sure felt like one, anyway, and there was no way for her to tell the time it had taken in the pitch-dark.
Her head was pounding heavily by the time she managed to drag herself into a small spot of sunlight and immediately passed out.
Hey, young one! If you've ever been to the ruins below the hewn city, then you might have seen the dragon statue there, the one made of aventurine. What if I told you that statue is actually a ghost?
Every once in a while, someone will turn up at the ruins and find it gone, and sometimes, they even see the ghost afterwards. It looks like a dragon alright, but it will never respond when spoken to, and all it does is stare at the entrance to the ruins.
You know, rumor is, it's the spirit of a dragon that has lost their partner inside those ruins, eons ago. Thread snapped and off they went. And that the ghost is still waiting for them to come back. Wonder what happened, huh?
Anyways, if you see it, keep your distance. You know, as one does with ghosts.
