_____________

Dreams of peace
In the night
Where there will
Be no fight

Safety lies
Within reach
If you could only
Fall asleep

But the cold won't let you sleep

Poem above written by me

You're freezing from inside
And the ice tries to consume
Every last part of you

It slowly takes over
From your heart to your bones
Creeping, seeping, encasing
All you were and hoped to be

The cold radiates out
From that frozen body of yours
Infecting the warmth around
And forcing it to flee

The cold keeps you awake
And as you watch, it takes
All you are and all you were
You are engulfed by the ice
Consumed until there is nothing left

Above poem is by Vriouss

The unforgiving, frigid terrain wreaked havoc on my body more than anything before.
One would think that being I had shifted into Ice, I would find this my home.
Sadly, no. That was not the case at all. The biting wind and scalding cold air seemed to mock my magical connection to it, summoning the cold within me to further wrack my already frail form.
My daughter and I trudged through the blizzard, hoping to find the village Hadrian had spoken of at our meeting. He had said that the mages in this village possessed a long-forgotten magic that could possibly heal my magical ailments.
I was beginning to wonder if Hadrian had lied, simply sending me and my daughter off to our doom. I glanced behind me. Through the violent flurries of snow I could see Cancer's form following behind me, shivering but not looking terrible. Her connection to the warmwaters must have been keeping the biting cold off her scales.
With a lurch to the stomach, I noticed darkness crawling around the edges of my vision. I slowed my pace, staring at the snow. The white blanket seemed to grow brighter, dizzying me. I feared closing my eyes, as that would mean succumbing to whatever unconsciousness was slinking up to engulf me.
"Father?" Cancer had noticed I'd faltered. As I started to turn to look at her, my legs gave out and the darkness overtook my vision.

"Father!"
Pisces opened his eyes at the sound of Cancer's voice, but the world was a dizzying blur around him and he shut them tight again. He had no sense that he was in motion; his own eyes and mind were playing tricks on him.
He gasped and realized he'd been holding his breath. The freezing air stung like fire in his lungs and he let out a heavy wheeze. Finally, the world seemed to stop morphing and pulsing and he was able to focus on his daughter's face in front of him. She had her talons rested against his chest, but with dawning fear Pisces realized he couldn't feel it. Not a hint of pressure, not a hint of warmth, as if he couldn't feel at all. At that moment he realized just how cold he was. His limbs were sluggish with cold and his body had given up on shivering.
Pisces noticed a light behind him and, with much effort, shifted to look towards it. With a tinge of horror, he realized he was in a house with a crackling fireplace. The horrible coldness wasn't external... it was inside himself.
He was almost dead.

"Dad," Cancer's voice cracked. I'd never heard her call me that... not since she was much, much younger. "Cancer," I rasped, wrapping my talons around hers. "Dad, is it..." Cancer trailed off, meeting my gaze worriedly.
"Was Hadrian lying?" I asked, not daring to answer her question. I was about to die- I was certain of it. But somehow I felt that saying it out loud would be so much worse.
"He wasn't lying about the village's power."
I looked at her hopefully. "Did we make it to the village?" My mouth felt frozen as I spoke.
"Yes, father. But the villagers cannot help you."
"What? I don't underst-" I broke off wheezing weakly, because I felt the urge to cough, but did not have the strength to do so.
"They no longer have the power. It was stolen away across the Sornieth seas."
I sighed hopelessly. That had been our last chance. The blood in my veins felt like it was running sluggishly, even though one cannot feel such things. I lacked the strength to move any longer. I was immobile with my talons wrapped around my daughter's. "Father," Cancer said again, face laced with worry at my silence.
"I can't hold on much longer, Cancer," I whispered weakly, suddenly finding the fight of speaking nearly impossible.
"Father, we can- I-" The girl lowered her head, the shiny streak of a tear on her cheek reflecting in the firelight.
"We did everything we could. Thank you, Cancer. For giving me company even when I said I didn't want it." Everything was a battle to force out of my mouth. I realized with a jolt that I had closed my eyes. I wanted to cry, but I was so frozen that I was incapable.
I breathed out. I never breathed back in.

Pisces's stiff hand went limp against Cancer's. At first, she didn't know how to respond. She knew he was gone. He was dead.
She couldn't hold back the tears gathering behind her eyes. She let out a whimper and a sob, tightening her grip against her father's cold talons.
The person she never thought would die had just breathed his last breath.
She couldn't help but wonder if Hadrian had wanted this to happen. Had he known the magic was gone, known the cold would finally deal its fatal wound here?
Had he sent her father to die, feigning sympathy and compassion?
