Vesta has always been a cold and detached figure, even as a youth. She was always able to see things that others weren't; the winding line between points A and B, the hunger in the hearts of others. Vesta knew from the jump that the world was full of death and pain and that the only thing to be done was to meet it on its own stride; to show her teeth to the world and become its master. Some, she knows, call her a megalomaniac. Vesta makes no claims to be a saint. She has done what she has had to do, and that is all. She regrets, of course. Who doesn't? But the blood on her hands is worth it all, in the end. She does not remember the warmth of her mother, for her mother's face is a haze long gone. There is little warmth to her. But Vesta has worked hard to get where she is. She watched her older brother's face blacken with poison dregs. She slit the throat of his husband that same night, and had Ruthe burn the house to the ground. It is key to understand her desolate ruthlessness, her regrets, because many of these happened before she realized that there were forces at work that threatened to unwind the world. The Fracturer. The Apex Predator. Extinction. Corrosion. The Bile Queen. The Grave-Eater. Dark essences, and their acolytes threaten to destroy everything. Others are aware, but they refuse to do what must be done. This is fine. Vesta has women behind her who will do what must be done. She has spent her life maneuvering coldly to ensure her own survival and the survival of those she loves. What, then, are a few more lives, once the Breakers of Things get claws into them?
