There's a killer loose in Sornieth. She hears of this dragon through the Water clans, who were called for help by the Wind clans. But a Water prison cannot hold a Wind dragon, so her clan is next. She investigates this killer, this Wind dragon who poisoned her clan members with no remorse and ran when her crime was discovered. But an Ice dragon investigating a dragon would be too scandalous, and so she disguises herself as a Water dragon. No need to make the others panic. The first few tracks are easy to follow. She fled to the edge of the territory–a rookie mistake. There would be nowhere to go and she would have to double back. After that, tracking gets harder. The killer's aura fades faster than normal, and switching to scent is no better. It's as if she disappeared, but that makes no sense. She follows as best as she can, circling the edge of the Wind territory. Finally, she sees a hidden path, lit by lanterns at night. It leads to another clan, this one led by a Shadow dragon. She explains the situation, that there might be a killer hiding among his dragons. He smiles, assuring her that there are no Wind dragons with that name here, but she must the tired from her search and could stay the night. She does, keeping an eye on all the dragons. There are dragons from every element, but none of the Wind dragons match the description, and none have the right name. Despite being on guard, she has to admit that the King makes sure she's comfortable. Her room is larger than her lair back home, and the food is delicious, warm and tender. Though her stay is comfortable, something is off. From the corner of her eye, she sees glimpses of color that don't match the dragon. Flashes of purple where there should be gold, red where there should be pink. She wonders if the heat is finally getting to her, if she should return to the snow and ice. The King calls her. He knows, he tells her. She's lying about being a Water dragon. She panics, confesses, explains that it would cause panic otherwise. He listens, amused, and asks if she enjoys pretending to be a Water dragon. She stares. She hadn't noticed, too busy with the chase, but yes, she did. She enjoys the mystery, the deception, the knowledge that no one else knew the truth. So stay and continue the deception, he offers. She accepts. |
