Biography

Illuminated Emblem

The Light-Touched Survivor

So it has returned.

Basecamp: Mountain Lair

With the return of the Brightshine Jubilee, Birchtwig has once again began to glow brightly from every part of her body, this time perhaps even more strongly than the first time. She has yet to begin sticking to bones, but is avoiding anything containing them nonetheless, out of concern that that too will begin again.

Elemental Nature
Birchtwig is Ice-born, but since a strange experience during her first Brightshine Jubilee, this is overshadowed by a powerful charge of Light. At its weakest, this Light is enough to cause her to physically glow, and when it is strong her natural colors are completely obliterated by golden light.

Physical description
Like her father, and the opposite of her sister Sprucetip, Birchtwig is a small and very dense tundra. She has massive wings for her size, allowing her great endurance in the air despite her weight.

Birchtwig's native coloration is shades of green, with coral wings, which are visible when the glow is at its nadir; at such times the light is concentrated in her mane, back, and claws, and shines green through her fur. When the Light is strong, as now, her entire body is awash in golden luminescence, with details often difficult to make out.

Birchtwig, while neither an elemental dragon nor a golem, seems still to lack life-fire entirely, rather running on some combination of Light and her Ice. She is cold to the touch, but not frozen, or at least not in a way that would be evident in her movements.

Origin
Birchtwig was born at Northslope when the clan was still young, at the beginning of the Season of Earth. Not long thereafter, she left to seek her fortunes in the wider world, ending up in a small Shadow clan along with Bergschrund. They had a nest there, including Darkstone, but soon after they hatched, the clan imploded. Birchtwig, Bergschrund and their children fled the ruins of the Shadow clan, and returned to Northslope.

At the time, Birchtwig was uncomfortable in her greatly-changed hatching-clan, and she and her daughter Cyanolyca moved to Cindercone, joining her sisters. Cyanolyca eventually left for Plaguebringer's service, but Birchtwig remained.

During her first Brightshine Jubilee, Birchtwig was hunting tablets with other Cindercone dragons, when she was drawn suddenly away. She was met by a shining imperial who was most likely a powerful Exalt to Lightweaver, who did something unknown to her while speaking cryptically. When she returned, Birchtwig was glowing brightly, and she has since been physically strange and full of Light at least as strong as her native Ice.

Birchtwig was still at Cindercone when the Trials began, but her dual Ice and Light nature made her incredibly weak to Lightning, and she was soon trapped. Her cousin Tanbo, come with a group but separated in hopes of aiding the refugees of Cindercone, found her thus. The two of them set out together, originally intending to continue to Cindercone's new clan-home, but discovered that Birchtwig had been logged as rescued, and was no longer drawn there.

After a long journey, the two cousins made their way back to Northslope, where Birchtwig has dwelt since. Birchtwig continued to glow brightly until the Crystaline Gala strengthened her native Ice, and resumed shining with her second Brightshine Jubilee.

Kin
Birchtwig is the daughter of two unusual tundras--Oreamne, matriarch of Northslope, and Allspice, one of the clan's founding members. Both of her parents have strong and atypical elemental ties, and both of them hold secrets. As a clan-founder, Oreamne's parentage is unknown, but Allspice comes from a long and varied pedigree, actually having more pearlcatcher than tundra ancestors.

Birchtwig has three sisters whom she left behind in Cindercone, all three of whom are likewise odd and/or multi-elemental. Of these, Sprucetip and Hedysara made it to Derecho Canyon, while Moonfire vanished en route, and had not been seen since. Birchtwig also has three half-brothers with whom she is in contact--Muskeg, who remains at Northslope, Ranger, who moved to Derecho Canyon, and Dayspring, who is still seeking a new home. Sprucetip also has a son, Birchtwig's nephew Tarandrus, in Derecho Canyon, who somehow manages to be even more mysterious than most of his family.

Birchtwig's aunt, Kellinlii, is Allspice's twin sister and if anything even stranger than he is. She dwells in Derecho Canyon, having arrived there late from the trials after the clan had presumed her dead. Firestone of Derecho Canyon and Tanbo and Leafblaze who live at Northslope are her children and Birchtwig's first cousins. Tanbo is the one who brought Birchtwig back from the Shifting Expanse, and is quite fascinated by her cousin's strange Light.

Birchtwig has had one nest of her own children, of whom one, Darkstone, remains in the mortal world and in fact in Northslope. Darkstone has never really managed to find a solid role, though he serves in patrols and exploration, and spends much of his time working on flying machines. Birchtwig and Bergschrund, the father of her nest, are on good terms, but have no plans for further nests.

Familiar
The Harvest Floracat to which Birchtwig is currently bonded joined her in Cindercone, and accompanied her through the trials. He was originally with Sprucetip, but shifted to Birchtwig while the sisters dwelt together. Though he smells of fallen autumn leaves no matter the season, he is entirely a cat, and has been known to bring back chickadees that Birchtwig passes on to other dragons who will eat them.
