⚔ STORY

Some consider it an inhumane treatment; to trap someone in a space too small for their physical forms, to tear their soul out through their mouths and bind them in a locket, severed forever from their mortal body. Or perhaps, a simple store room opens upon an endless maze of hedges and cobblestones. Except when you look too closely at the stones beneath your feet… they’re the rounded, polished tops of bleached white skulls. The door has closed behind you, vanished into thin air. There is only bone and hedge as far as you can see. Above you, the cloudless, sunless blue sky mocks all understanding of the natural world.

Tai Shien can confine bodies, minds, souls in spaces that were never intended to hold them. The physical plane she walks is meaningless when there are so many other infinite realities in the cracks of the earth. An entire galaxy spins between her fingers, an impossible glittering void writhes between her teeth. Sure, sometimes her gifts can be used to make a bottomless bag, a luxurious convenience for anyone who enjoys both travelling and the occasional creature comfort. Perhaps she can enchant a single room and turn it into a sprawling indoor village, perfect for those who are conscious of their impact on their surroundings. Or she can hide entire armouries in a crate small enough to carry unaided. She prefers these to the expectations of her clan: creating impressively vast prison complexes in as small a space as possible. Using her magic to make life easier for everyone is better than figuring out the best way to trap the highest number of souls in the least amount of space.

She’d thought her magic something common and not worthy of comment. Until she arrived at the Reliquary and realised that not everyone blessed with unusual skills is so easily accepted. Here, she learned that theirs is a world filled with intolerance. Through their eyes, she learned that such magic can be used for ill – for dreadful, malicious purposes – as well as for the betterment of society. Having realised this, she elected to stay. After all, there’s no reason at all that she should be accepted when Saph, a child who simply can’t control her magic, should be shunned and feared.

Of course, there is magic in the world worth fearing. But that doesn’t mean it deserves to be eradicated. Watched warily, yes, but destroyed? No one deserves that. So if such a threat is revealed, then she will put her skills to use and lock it safely away.

ORIGIN / Prisons in the Starfall Isles are not at all familiar to those used to the cage-and-bar style gaols established by the Icewarden’s creations. Some Arcane prisons hire the soul-trappers of the Sol Cour clan. These enchanters can warp space such that a small area can seem much larger, can hold much more. Tai Shien left her clan in search of a prison to work her magic and the Reliquary seems the perfect place.

Fact / Tai Shien is something of an anomaly in the canyon in that she actually isn’t in danger of being hunted as a monster or abomination. Her magic would certainly qualify her in some places, but she never had to flee herself. Her compassion for others who were less fortunate than herself is part of why she elected to stay.

Likes / Little shiny things and stars. The dry heat that shimmers over sand and the salty tang of a sea breeze. The musty, closeness of the library; the way it always smells like paper and the soft sounds Pencil pottering around her home.

Dislikes / This canyon is… weird. She does not appreciate how it works. Tai Shien had thought magic such as hers had limitations but this whole canyon has been manipulated? It’s way bigger than it should be? The southern reaches are endless? She hates it. But her fascination won’t let her leave. Learning opportunities and all that.

Interests / Often runs little treasure hunts for the children of the clan. She'll bury trinkets and other items of bizarre lovecraftian nature in the fringes of the desert where her power over space starts to crackle and make reality warped and weird. They love trying to find things. She just has to keep an eye on them to make sure they don't disappear into the endless sands.
