"If the only thing that keeps you going is your heart, remember that at least you're still here. You are a blessing, even if cursed."
⚔ STORY
In some footsteps, calamity follows. Plague and drought, pestilence and raging waters, furious winds and earthquakes. Færgryre is one such. Where she walks, tragedy follows. It wasn't always this way; when she was younger, she was a child just like any other, but her clan was greedy and ambitious. They sought to expand their territory and were ruthless in their displacement of others in their pursuit of resources and wealth. She was only a child when this was happening, of course, and remembers almost none of it; the rumbling of their machines and the thundering of the factories are but a hazy dream, ill-kept and easily lost when reached for. One of the clans her family's expansion intruded upon, however, was a vengeful host of witches and, when the machines rolled over their home and destroyed the trees and fields, they cast a curse against Færgrye's clan. At first, nothing seemed to have happened. After the curse boiled in an angry cauldron of gunmetal clouds and grumbled ominously across the sky - precursor to a single lance of blinding lightning (an unnatural order) - there was silence. There was silence and a light drizzle of rain and the destroyed lands of the coven churned to mud beneath their wheels. At first, it was assumed to have failed. But then Færgryre walked and corrosion ate away at the metal plates of her home, locusts infested their food stores, fires leaped higher than they should and raged improbably against the steel. Færgryre walked and the elaborate travelling city trembled beneath her, shuddered into pieces. She was cast out from that home while still young, before even beginning her Search, and for long years, the only company she kept was the animals summoned to her side by her curse. Rats and roaches and other insects that are considered foul harbingers of pestilence. They were her friends, her family, and when no one else wanted her, she had them. But when the pull of her Charge called, she had to wander again into inhabited places. Once more, she had to face the judgement and disgust of those who have no idea what it means to be cursed. Eventually, her curse brought to her a rat with large, intelligent eyes and quick hands. This one felt different. She dubbed her Calamity and even though no one had ever explained Charges to Færgryre, she knew what this meant. And so together they returned to wandering; searching for a place where they could live in peace without bringing troubles down on others. And luckily, in the canyon there is reprieve. By the blessings of the Reliquary's curse - not a curse to her, not by half - the despair she carries turns to gentle winds and resilience. For somehow (no explanation needed) she is no omen of ill fortune. Not here. It's something Serendipity recognises, a similar fear of self in Færgryre's eyes. Here, she was welcomed warmly. ⚔ OTHER
