Two years ago, we found a way to recreate portals to other universes.

The portals weren’t new, of course. We’ve been using them to send spacecraft and dragons into orbit for well over a decade now. But this was something different; similar to the Rift created by the deities, though much smaller and less stable. The technology is still in its infancy and likely raises more potential ethical implications than even our Shade research or faster-than-light travel. I assure you, nobody understands the sort of fire we are playing with better than we do. There’s a reason we have an ethics committee. But truth be told, we are running out of other ideas.

This machinery- every computer chip and wire and giant metal cylinder and little blinking light you see here- when activated, seeks out a signal within a certain bandwidth of its own conditions, and connects with a corresponding machine in another universe. It creates a two-way communications link- and with significantly more effort and power, a passage between worlds. One of the main challenges we faced was that the first machine- the duller cylinder you can see here- would only allow us to lock onto a world whose timeline was identical to ours until the precise moment of connection. Eventually, with something like a thousand times the original computing power and enough machinery that the entire underground complex now extends beyond Vigilance city borders, we managed to extend our capabilities to contacting timelines similar enough to ours, but not identical.

That’s how Argo joined us.

Xe’s Carina, in a way. Same genetics, different starting conditions; like a pair of twins raised in completely different homes. When we contacted xem and learned of what lay on the other side, we were offered a glimmer of hope. A Sornieth without the Rift, self-sufficient and thriving. A Sornieth without flights, as well; the Eleven were a part of the planet itself. Where there was ice, there was Icewarden. Where there was sea, there was Tidelord. Lightweaver lived in every ray of sun and Shadowbinder lurked in every shadow. There were no flights, no wars between the gods, no sharp divides in the landscape; why would light and shadow battle when every day was a cycle? Why would nature embroil itself in a war against illness? Why should dragons be expected to pledge their lives to pointless conflicts between the elements themselves? Magic is weak, of course; too weak and inefficient and dispersed to support the sort of lifestyle many a dragon in our modern world is used to. But they managed. Better yet, they thrived.

For the first time in a long time, something gave us hope. Maybe we can make this work. Maybe we won’t have to choose between moral atrocities. Maybe, maybe, maybe. We have no way to know for sure. But it’s better than apathy.

Honestly, I don’t know what most people would do if a version of them from another timeline reached out and asked for their help. How many people would leave everything behind to help a planet of strangers. The more a reality diverges from our own, the shorter the window of communication is. We lost contact with xyr world a few months ago. Perhaps one day we’ll find them again- a single branch within an infinite branching tree that’s missing their Carina. But I think xe knows as well as we do that this is the universe xe’ll live and die in.
