gotta rewrite this into something more coherent later, for now this is just ideas i’m throwing at the wall
-Carina has absolutely no magical ability whatsoever- like oil and water. Vela is the opposite, her body overflowing with magic so it glows from within.
Vela comes from another universe where everything went horribly wrong. NC tried to make the truth public but were met with fear and anger- rightfully so, perhaps- and were located by the deities before they had a chance to convince anyone. The Flotilla was decimated and left stranded with no way to restock resources, the Vigilance was destroyed, and most of the organization’s members were killed or captured. (Vela doesn’t know what happened to them; she hopes they died quickly. She dreads that perhaps the Deities knew NC has been able to communicate with parallel universes and could perhaps have used that same tactic to inform their counterparts in this world prior to their destruction, which has led to an accelerated schedule for Flotilla development.) Sornieth turned against them entirely, and word quickly spread of a group of mad scientists in a cult attempting to use the Shade as a weapon against the deities and destroy magic, the fabric of life itself. There was no place they could turn, and had no way to convince others of outlandish-sounding claims. All of the Riftkind in the Holding Facility were destroyed, but Celeste managed to escape. Celeste was sorry their efforts to find a mutually beneficial solution had failed, but in the end, her duty was to her people. With the intelligence she would bring them, the Shade would not fail to wipe out the Eleven again. In a final act of desperation, hoping to prevent the total destruction of Sornieth, Vela and a small remaining group of survivors attempted to close the Rift on their own, but succeeded only in destabilizing it, disrupting the core of the Rift star and flooding Sornieth with far more magical energy than it was ever meant to handle. Most dragons died in this initial surge. Vela was the only survivor of that party, and managed to find her way through the apocalyptic landscape of Sornieth to the ruins of the Vigilance at the bottom of the ocean. The underground complex was still mostly intact, and she managed to find her way inside and fix the big ~quantum reality communication thing that I still need to name~. She reached out, and managed to save herself and pass through into this reality. It’s believed she was the only (mortal) survivor from a catastrophe that destroyed both Sornieth and Riftkind.
