Biography

The dragon regards me silently as I approach him with tonight's meal. He seems happy with my company, and we sit and eat together, not a word exchanged between us.

I've taken to calling this guy Apheliotes, since he's fond of farming. I don't know what his real name is, since he doesn't talk, but he doesn't seem to hate it. I found him in the trees down the mountain, badly wounded and brewing a storm with his howling. He was almost torn to shreds. I don't know if it was another dragon or poachers that nearly did him in, but Elea and I managed to get him home and healed. I don't think his wings will ever recover completely, but they're getting their strength back day by day.

I don't know much about Gaolers, and I've only heard this and that, and what I've found in books. Despite his size, Apheliotes is incredibly gentle with the other dragons, and loves midday naps in the sun. He doesn't have a hoard, but he keeps a thriving garden in the spring and summer. When he sheds his antlers, we make decorations out of them for the others' hoards. By all accounts, he seems like the complete opposite of what I've heard about his species. Maybe he was ostracized, and couldn't make it on his own? Or worse, was he left like that by his own family? It wouldn't be the first time I've seen things like that happen.

I hope he's happy staying with us, though. Maybe someday he'll feel brave enough to see the world, and we'll have to say goodbye, but he'll always have a home here.
