Oanju was abused and treated like a monster by the clan she was hatched in. She was bullied constantly due to the fact she was an orphan and couldn't defend herself, as well as the vibrant mane of silky hair cascading down her body. Many consider it strikingly beautiful when they see it, but to Oanju's hatching clan, it was just another excuse to show the poor pearlcatcher cruelty...

~Finally, in a climatic show of utter heartlessness and cruelty, three children of Oanju's hatching clan's leader cornered her as she was reading peacefully, curled up in the roots of her favorite tree, on a rare break authorized by the clan leader. Before Oanju had time to react, the three dragons rushed her, pinning her against the trunk of the tree and pummeling her viciously. Her heart was a storm of utter confusion at their anger and a deep sadness as pain lanced through every part of her body. She was knocked out with a final, glancing blow to her jaw, and the three dragons (by the names of Glopa the mirror, Binklae the fae, and Reilqua the spiral) tied her up with thorned vines and threw her, unconcious, into the heart of the Mire.

~The blood that trickled from her numerous wounds was an attraction to the dangerous creatures lurking in the Mire, and soon, the unresponsive pearlcatcher was surrounded by a total of five venemous toridaes, three shellions, and seven silt wolves, circling her prone form like sharks. They had never seen an unmoving dragon just bound and chucked into their midst, but it looked like an easy meal.

~This is the first time Astraye and Oanju meet. Astraye is on a late evening Mire run. He felt a sort of tug, a pull to go, as he told Oanju later. He isn't able to explain how he found Oanju, either; it seemed his heart led him in the right direction, and he appeared in the nick of time. Just as the first silt wolf lunges at Oanju, Astraye charges into the clearing with a roar of rage that shakes the trees and awakens the pearlcatcher. At first, Oanju is extremely confused as to where she is, but as she awakens fully and her senses return to her, she watches with a mixture of fear and awe as the enraged Astraye engages in ferocious combat with the beasts that had surrounded her moments before.

~After a dramatic battle, Astraye defeats all of the creatures and turns to Oanju. She is very grateful, but somewhat fearful of this formidable, mysterious... actually sort of handsome spiral. Astraye tells her his name, and he asks where she is from as he unties the spiked bonds she is wrapped in. She starts to tell him, holding back her pain, but stops in mid-sentence as she sees a bright psywurm slink up behind Astraye. She yells a warning, but his focus was on Oanju, and he reacted too late. He whirled around, but the psywurm attacked too quickly; a powerful Enamor struck Astraye full in the face, blinding him with brilliant light. (This is where his spectroscope accent comes from.) He falls, collapsing in a heap on the ground, defeated for only the second time in his life by a enemy.

~For the first time in Oanju's life, she is overwhelmed with rage. And for the first time in her life, she attacked another being. She flew at the psywurm, forgetting her pain in her anger. She, however, was a very, very inexperienced fighter. She managed to kill the psywurm, but she payed for it dearly, and still has the scars to this day: one on her eye, several on her legs, and one across her arm.

~Astraye is still conscious, but is dazed, and his eyes are closed. Oanju notices the first signs of the glow about his head and the flecks of light growing in his scales, but she pushes it aside, along with her pain from her new wounds, and tries to wake him up. He stirs and opens his eyes, but cries out in pain when he does so, squeezing them shut again, moaning about the blinding brightness.

~The spiral can barely move, but he can still speak, and he decides, reluctantly at first (almost no strange dragons are ever brought to or given directions to the hidden cave system of the Seers), to give Oanju directions to the Seer Clan so she can lead him home, as he is not able to open his eyes. They stumble through the Mire, Oanju trailing blood, Astraye limping blindly behind her. They somehow manage to not attract any more creatures. Eventually the ground starts to clear and the air crackles with electricity. Oanju finds the hidden entrance to the Seer Clan cave systems, and she and Astraye go inside.

~In love with Astraye.

??~she and astraye and welcomed into the seer clan, and for a while she is very happy. she and astraye decide to have children, and he sires two eggs. A few days after, she is kidnapped in the middle of the night by her old evil clan leader. Almost half of the dragons he had left his clan and he wanted Oanju back. he does not know that oanju has eggs though

~Oanju can do various types of magic and spells, but she usually only uses them for emergencies, as it taxes her very much. There is always the possiblity lurking in the shadows that if she attempts a too-powerful spell, it can drain all of her energy and kill her. She uses her numerous spellbooks for her magic, though she has a few simple, low-energy charms she uses on a rare mischievious or wistful whim for magic.

~Oanju is also in possesion of two Dark Scrolls, which contain very powerful shadow spells. Oanju is the only dragon in the Seer Clan able to wield the might of the Dark Scrolls. However, Oanju keeps the scrolls hidden at the bottom of her spell collections, and tries to never touch them; for when she does, multitudes of whispering voices invade her mind, and it takes all of her control to keep her sanity in check. She has only used the Dark Scrolls once, to defend the Seer Clan from a swarm of lethal intruders. All of the defenses were down, and nothing but magic could stop the horde. So Oanju grabbed the the first Dark Scroll, pushing through the voices, and cast a hugely powerful, shadow/wind hybrid defense shield, pushing the intruders out and flinging them miles away from the Seer Clan upon gusts and tendrils of shadowed wind. Afterwards, she fell unconcious for three solid days.

The sky is so beautiful today, thought Oanju as she gazed up at expanse of azure stretching seemingly forever across Sornieth. Wisps of white clouds drifted slowly across the heavens, and Oanju could hear the distant calls of sparrows and budgies frolicking in the air. She smiled gently, tipping her head back even further, letting the warm sunlight bathe her face. Her long, deep red mane brushed across her face and shoulders, tickling her scales softly. Usually, she would try to pull it back and hide it, but there was no one to see it here, so she let it cascade down her body. Here, she was at peace. There were no dragons to call her names, no dragons to make her feel like a monster, no dragons to order her around-
"OANJU!"
The pearlcatcher sighed, closing her eyes as reality came tumbling back down to smack her right in the snout. She was never really alone, of course. There was almost always someone watching, someone spying, someone lurking around the corner, making sure she... behaved, as they said. More like trying their best to make my life as miserable as they can, Oanju thought sadly.
"OANJU!" Roared the voice again, closer this time.
She sighed again, lowered her face from the sky, and turned to face the entrance to the small clearing she was in as a bulky, ragged, and decidedly ugly mirror stampeded into the clearing. The dragon was wearing a brown cloak, the edges torn and dirty, along with set of leather footpads and gloves. But the most noticable thing he was wearing - and the most important - was the obsidian pendant around his neck. The stone seemed to pulse with darkness, almost like it was absorbing the light. A pure drop of shadow.
It meant he was a child of the clan leader.
It also meant that he had total authority over Oanju, and could treat her however his cruel heart desired; and she could do nothing. Absolutely nothing.
"Oanju," Glopa hissed, his black tongue flicking in and out of his mouth. His four crimson eyes riveted on her as he blinked several times, clearing them of the dust kicked up by his arrival. He tipped his head to the side, his eye-ridges lowering dangerously as he realized she was doing something other than manual labor. The poor pearlcatcher gulped, wincing as she also realized she was doing something other than manual labor. And she had just been caught.
Oanju opened her mouth to explain - she was just taking a break - she was so tired - but the mirror didn't let her speak. He spat, slithering up to her, and clamped her snout shut with his claws. Oanju's eyes widened, and she tried to shake her head to break free, but Glopa's grip was too strong.
The mirror brought his face up close to hers, his breath reeking of rotten fish and fireroot, his four red eyes staring malevolently into hers. When he spoke, his voice was low and mean.
"You, servant, are not allowed to do anything but work. You are lucky that my high and mighty father even deigns to let you breathe. You are useless. You are nothing. You are empty, mindless. You do not matter. So, we put you to work. Work does not involve gazing into the sky wistfully like a lovesick idiot, understand?"
Without giving Oanju a chance to respond, the mirror let go of her snout, shoved her to the ground, and slithered out of the clearing, chuckling to himself as Oanju lay trembling on her back.
She had been treated like this thousands of times. It was all going to be fine. She could just forget it.
Everything was going to be fine.
"Why must I suffer so?" Oanju whispered to the sky. In her heart was great sorrow. She was just so confused. Why did the clan dragons treat her like a monster? She was a dragon, like the rest of them, not a monster. Even if she was a little different.
All she had ever wanted was a family, but all dragons did was push her away.
A single, bright tear trailed from her eye, and she felt a great pain in her chest, like her soul was cracking, fracturing, breaking. The bright blue sky seemed to mock the darkness inside of her heart, the cheerful calls of the birds blatantly ignoring the swirling storm of hurt and pain growing inside of Oanju. She closed her eyes, the imprints of the drifting clouds upon her eyelids.
"I want to give up," she murmured, her voice laced with sorrow. She lifted a talon to her mane, threading it through her fingers as she mourned her differences, the things that made her Oanju. For it seemed that she herself was simply unlovable, and though she tried as hard as she could, she could not change who she was.
A sigh escaped from her tired lungs, and she shook her head, her eyes still closed, the shapes of the faded clouds dancing behind her vision. Her talons fell from her mane, and she sat up, determination pushing away the hurt, the pain. She masked it, hid it, locked it away, hid it behind a closed door. She would not give up. Even though the sadness was there, she would not let it take her over. She would not let Glopa, and Binklae, and Reilqua, and the clan leader, and all the others win. Opening her eyes, she stared defiantly back up again at the sky. Pushing herself to her feet, her mane cascading around her, she set her gaze straight ahead and loped out of the clearing, the mask securely in place, the door closed tight.
