Biography
Raina always knew what she was meant to do. She'd worked in Sanctuary's Library from the beginning, cleaning, cataloguing, and making sure everything was as neat and orderly as can be. It was a quiet life, but it suited her; she didn't much care for the hustle of the dragons above. She loved being around the books. All the stories felt like family to her. Sometimes she would get so caught up in her own world that Virtue would forget she was there, only to be surprised by the book or quill Raina saw she needed. Regardless, she was content with her peaceful life, one that she thought would never change.
On a sunny April morning, Raina awoke to find a 'prophecy' written on a rolled-up scroll beside her den. Upon further investigation, she found every other member of Sanctuary had as well. Hers was fairly brief, yet cryptic: "A mysterious Pearlcatcher will walk into your life and really complicate things. Maybe stay home today."
After a good deal of thought, Raina decided that she didn't want to risk complication in her life- she liked it just as it was, quiet and peaceful. Of course, as she never really went outside of Sanctuary, staying home could only mean the Pearlcatcher was within Sanctuary. Even if not, the best thing to do would be to stay away from normal life until the day was over. She grabbed a wool dress and overcoat to keep herself warm, then crept from her nook among the books.
She spent the day enjoying the sun just outside of Sanctuary. There seemed to be a remarkable number of packages arriving today, and she heard excited squeals from within. As dusk fell over the icefields, Raina began to shiver and finally decided it was time to call it a night and go back to her warm den. The 'prophecy' might not have been real, after all.
As she flew down the steps, she breathed a sigh of relief. No Pearlcatchers. It must've just been a joke.
"Oh, Raina!" Virtue called from her desk, startling the Fae, who hadn't seen her in the relative darkness of the Library. "You're just the dragon I wanted to see!"
A feeling of dread settled into Raina's stomach as she flew over to land on the desk.
"Did you see all the visitors today?" Virtue asked.
Raina nodded. "What were they here for?"
"Spirit gave a list of the apparel some of the dragons wanted to one of our allies, who then sent it to other tribes as well, and we were attacked by gifts from all sides. It was incredible, but very hard on the messenger dragons. We still need to keep records of the apparel dragons need, however, so Spirit gave me this list." She opened a drawer in her desk and pulled out a small scroll. "I can't keep it myself, though- you know how forgetful I can be sometimes. I didn't know what to do, but then I saw you coming in and knew who it would have to be! People don't often come down here, and if they do, most don't see you. You're the perfect dragon for the job! So what do you say?"
The Fae was about to decline the offer, but the hopeful look in Virtue's eyes made her say, "Of course I'll do it. You can count on me."
"Excellent!" The Pearlcatcher beamed, handing her the scroll. "Thank you very much!"
Raina now knows her role is much different than before. She still cleans the Library, catalogues its books, and gets lost in the countless stories. But every time another dragon comes in, wherever they may be from, she flits into the shelves and disappears from view, always carrying that small scroll tucked into her overcoat.
