Kauri was old enough to remember his adoption, though the traumatic circumstances of it don’t bother him so much anymore. Yafe and Shaami took the young ridgeback in as their own after his superstitious family wanted to be rid of him for “strange fascinations and tongues,” which was quickly identified as the ability to speak with insects and encouraged by the witches rather than punished.

Happy with his new family, Kauri is equally happy to try to help wherever he can - even if he is too uncoordinated to do any of his moms’ gardening or potion making. Instead, he helps his elderly parents with moving large things around and does his best to get pests out of the garden, usually by befriending them and giving them a home elsewhere.

Fortunately for the whole family, a large Ridgeback surrounded by wasps and other swarming insects is a terrifying sight that keeps away any potential wrongdoers (and those annoying potential-neighbor settlers Yafe’s so tired of)
