The Rose Man

m4.png
Tending to the roses is a dedicated calling.
Smelling the roses is a necessity.

Is growing roses a profession? Almost everything Fraudir does is related to his roses. His main interest is the blooms and their scent, but there are many other uses for a rose. The thorny vines provide good hedging, the plants draw delicious insects to them and the petals make a great salad garnish. And don't forget rosehips! He supplies perfumers, herbalists, candy makers, jelly enthusiasts and vegetarians. His work isn't limited to the sheltered space he's created for his most delicate varieties either. Climbing roses drape themselves over tree limbs, hedge roses border paths, and the delicate blooms of the hardy dog rose border the meadow and woods. A rose for every situation, and Fraudir to tend it!

x7.png He likes all roses of course, but has a special weakness for the great big yellow blooms of Gladekeeper's Garland, a heavily scented climber originating in the Everbloom Gardens. It was this plant that moved him to join a Nature clan. He's brought his Wind heritage with him in the form of a variety of bamboos, excellent for fencing and trellis building alike.

Fraudir has a passion for growing roses, but as a fae, he does a nice sideline in insect harvesting. One gardener's pest is another's snack. That being said, someone has to pollinate all those roses, and so Fraudir has struck up a friendship with the local Leaf Moths.

The tulips were missing. Or, not so much the tulips as the tulip bulbs. Freshly imported from the best flower conjurer in Arcane, they were rare and fat, full of magical potential, and meant to be the pride of next spring's display. And Fraudir was sure they had been right there, on the potting bench, between the newly scrubbed pots ready to wait out the winter, and the basket of seedheads that had yet to be stripped and stashed away.

Looking around, he could find no sign. The paper bag they were packed in was nowhere to be seen, and neither was the crate of straw that had protected them on their journey. That was a good crate too, he had plans for that crate!

Grumbling fussily he pottered about, tidying up the last pots and tools from his earlier work, hoping something might turn up. He'd been out most of the afternoon raking up leaves, helping Wildflower with the compost and generally putting his roses to sleep. The last job of the day was to be the most satisfying, laying out the bulb arrangements and popping them into the holes made with his nice new dibbler. It had markings for planting depth for each type of bulb, he was very pleased with the gift Palm had brought him from her last travels, and he had been looking forward to using it for the first time.

Finally the shed was clean, tidy and neat. Each tool in its place, each pot in its stack. He stood with his claws in little fists on his hips, surveying his work with both pride and frustration. It was good to be done for the season but where were those bulbs?!

Wildflower strolled past and looked in on him, curious to see what the little rose afficionado was up to. "Done with your planting schemes?" She shook some damp leaves from her limbs and set to cleaning soil from her claws. "You don't look very pleased."

"Ah!" he cried, "the bulbs are gone! I've looked everywhere."

"Hmmm..." Just then the Trumpet Porcupine she had recently befriended trundled past, a mouthful of straw in its jaws, a sleepy expression on its muzzle. "Where are you going, little one?"

Fraudir glanced at the porcupine, and then took a suspicious closer look. "That straw...."

He frowned and stepped out to follow the creature at a distance, and Wildflower followed after out of curiosity. The little parade slowly rounded the shed, passed the little bamboo patch Fraudir kept for trellising, and headed around the back where some pine trees had dropped a century's worth of needles in a dense pile. Every few steps the porcupine stopped to snuffle some leaves, collect some dried grass, and blink up at the lowering sun. Eventually it nosed its way into the pine needles, scrambling clumsily over a root and behind a large trunk.

Fraudir gasped in outrage. Between the trunk and the back wall of his potting shed was his crate, with his straw, along with a mess of dried grasses and pinecones. And in the middle of that, was his paper bag, with HIS tulips still in it! And now a fat sleepy porcupine was climbing in with them, shimmying its winter-ready fat bum into the nest and smacking its furry lips as if settling in for a nap.

"Wildflower! Your creature is sleeping with my tulips! Oh I never!"

The coatl laughed at him, equally delighted by her little friend's hopping shock and her pet's awkward sweetness. She went back to the shed, dug out an old burlap sack and filled it with some more pinecones, and several slightly withered apples. Stroking her familiar's spines and petals smooth, she gently lifted its already torporous form, and slid the sack in to replace the bag of bulbs.

"There you go, mystery solved! Here, I'll help you get them into the ground."

Fraudir took his bag, checked the bulbs were all there, and not nibbled and then dropped his shoulders in resignation.

"I suppose it is only a silly little thing. It can have my crate for the winter, I'll get another. It's time for my dibbler!"

Fraudir looked over the big chocolate box carefully, considering each one before making a choice.

"The biggest rose shaped one please!" he requested. "Roses are always full of bugs, I'm sure that will be the best one." He rubbed his little gardener's hands together in anticipation, and then immediately started nibbling at the bonbon, nearly the size of his own head.

"Mmm, oh yum.. oh... hm. Is that... Oh how fun there's a fortune in here. Now what's this its wrapped around, some buggy nougat maybe? Oh... well that's an interesting orange colour.. or is it blue? Is that... a fish? Is there a fish swimming in there?? I say, there's a little bottle in here with a live fish in it!"
