In another life -- perhaps in several others -- Solen is a true member of the Crows, carrying on a proud and bloody legacy. In this one, he is a trusted but lightly estranged heir. It's a fine line, but one that Solen is accustomed to walking. He corresponds with his parents regularly and attends the odd Crow-hosted event, but the distance he keeps is deliberate. The most important thing in the world to Solen is Reshstella, and the life he has, against all odds, managed to build in the Thornspire Crags. Solen would seek to jeopardize that for nothing.

Solen's first encounter with Stella was both expected and unexpected. Solen's mother, Gabrielle, knew someone who knew someone who knew a handful of noble families with potential mates and marriage contracts for Solen. Most of these prospects were other nobility whose dealings were less than legal, and certainly less than moral. Reshstella was an outlier, her clan seemingly upstanding and clean. Solen wasn't supposed to pick her. He did anyway. It was a brief meeting, scarcely more than a formal introduction under the supervision of their parents, but something sparked there, and the flame burned long and low in Solen's chest in the wake of that meeting.

The plan was always to marry him off, or send him away. Solarius and Gabrielle were parents primarily by title. They were attentive whenever possible, and Gabrielle handled her hatchlings with a businesslike warmth, but they were devoted to other things. Solarius was a philosopher first and foremost. He would never be anything else. Gabrielle loved Solen in her way, and raised him as best she could, but her attention was promised to other things. Solen could either make use of his noble blood and marry well, or grow up to work for the Crows. His parents urged him towards the first option. They were proud of their work, but it wasn't -- they agreed -- for everyone.

Years elapsed between that first meeting and his eventual departure from the outpost, but Solen never quite forgot Reshstella. Her clan was bright and colorful, and the Starfall Isles promised great opportunities for studying literature and history -- both of which Solen had grown quite fond of. Now a young adult armed with his mother's warmth and his father's formidable stature, he tracked down her address and sent a letter ahead, announcing his incoming visit. It only took a few more same such visits before he was arranging to leave the Tangled Wood for good.

The Starfall Isles were a bit of a learning curve at first, but Solen had made one or two trips with his father when he was younger, so he wasn't completely out of his depth. His life in the Isles seems so natural now, he can hardly remember a time when he tread carefully and spoke with caution. He has grown into a studious and dedicated scholar with a particular affinity for rare books.

Still, Solen is constantly aware of his heritage and his unshakable relation to the Crows. He remains on good terms with the organization and they haven't caused him any personal trouble thus far, but he can't help but wonder if they might call upon him for a favor. By nature of his parents' involvement and his own birthright, he is still a member. He has not kept this fact from Stella, but it's not common knowledge. For the time being, Solen occupies himself with writing, reading, and trading books and scrolls with other scholars, scribes, poets, and historians. He's a bit of a fussy dresser and appreciates anything that glitters -- perhaps a leftover tendency from his young days as mob royalty. True to his Shadow nature, he also enjoys chess, cards, and senet.
