The entry is written in faded ink, a date scrawled at the top of the page next to a short title that reads “The Cursed Crown”. It is the account of one Anthony Reed regarding the disappearance of his business partner, James Burton.

"I will admit that I am somewhat of a collector. I deal in unusual trinkets, you know, the type of thing you would expect to find in an antique shop. Items that are unique in one way or another are what typically catch my eye and I frequently travel, picking up such wares and bringing them back to my shop in the Tangled Woods. You can pretty easily find the place, it’s called Reed and Butron’s Antiques. You’re probably wondering about the name. James Burton was my business partner until not too long ago. Well, I suppose that’s why I’m here.

It started off with a regularly scheduled business trip last March. I was typically the one to travel and James would stay behind, tending the shop while I was away. This particular venture brought me to the Windsweapt Plateau right in time for the Mistral Jamboree. Festivals are typically one of the best times to stock up on supplies and I returned to the Tangled Woods with several suitcases of trinkets to stock our shop. It was when I returned that I found James had procured an object of his own to add to the collection. I wasn’t sure where he had gotten it; he only said that someone had offered it as a trade for one of our wares and it certainly seemed to be worth more than anything that we had for sale.

The item in question was a gilded crown. It appeared to be made of solid gold with several bright red rubies inlaid into the metal. Certainly, not many crowns like this one had been crafted and I grew curious about the its origins. I asked James if he was considering selling it and he snatched the thing forcefully out of my hands, scowling as he did so. “Of course not”. He replied, rubbing a finger across one of the rubies. “Do you have any idea how much this thing could be worth?”

“Sorry” I responded. I understood the sentiment, but I had never seen James act so distrustfully before and I found it rather unsettling how that crown made him behave.

Over the next few months, James began to change. He stopped interacting with customers and often I couldn’t find him behind the cashier or anywhere in the shop during our business hours. When I did find him, he was always holding that crown, sometimes staring at it obsessively as he traced the golden leaf-like filigree and shining rubies. His finger always landed over the wolf embedded into the gold. His eyes grew tired and dark and I began to wonder how much he had been sleeping. It bothered me greatly.

When I finally confronted James about his behavior and the strange crown, he only became defensive. He snapped at me and began talking about how I certainly must want to pry his treasure away from him. He said something about how he wouldn’t allow himself to be separated from her. “She won’t allow it” he growled before storming out of the shop.

I didn’t see James for a few days after that, but each time he reappeared, the bags under his eyes darkened and he seemed thinner as if he were wasting away. Still, he clutched that crown. The last time I saw him, James looked rather frail. I asked if he needed anything, but he only shook his head. I looked up to meet his gaze and found that even his eyes were blank and dull and he was actually wearing the crown. I tried to call his family and other friends to see if someone could check in on James, but it appeared that no one I called knew who I was talking about.

Ultimately, James disappeared without a trace. I tried calling the police, but they told me that they had never heard of a James Burton living in our town and that the home address I mentioned had been vacant for several months. Our shop is still called Reed and Burton’s Antiques, although no one I’ve talked to seems to remember James at all. . . and certainly no one recalls ever seeing a gilded crown either.

The descriptions of the crown in Anthony Reed’s tale are unusually similar to an artifact described as ‘Minerva’s Crown’, a cursed object said to have been one of the earlier items confiscated and locked away in the Vault of Dhune. Still, there was never any remark about a wolf being part of the crown’s design and I wonder if something more than the crown’s original curse has taken up residence inside of it.

We did investigate Anthony Reed’s tale. There is indeed still an antique shop called Reed and Burton’s in the Tangled Woods, although according to local residents, the shop has always been owned by a sole individual - Anthony Reed. Amidst the wares of the shop, however, we did find something of interest. Hiding in a crack in the floorboards near the antique books, we retrieved a single red ruby that had fallen onto the ground.

- A. Rowan

Lore notes:
- Child of the Barghest, Orthrus and Goetia (child of Mirza and Sahiba).
- Goetia's children are vessels made to contain each of the 1000 demons who possessed her and her brother, Solomon. On their father's side, Minerva is of Roe's line (beasts obsessed with treasure and finery - thinking themselves of royal blood).
- Minerva herself has inherited many strange abilities. She is a beast of treasures - hiding amidst the brilliant rubies inlaid upon a cursed crown and preying on thieves and those who covet such material goods. She often whispers from the crown, tempting her victims to wear the article and then consuming their minds once she is allowed inside.
- Essentially her victims disappear into the crown. She can also emerge and appears as a great wolf wearing a gilded crown.
