Diarmuid is his parents' middle child: too young for an inheritance and too old to be spoiled. Quickly growing bored with his family's business, Diarmuid finds his excitement in gambling, instead.

A wild streak of beginner's luck enthralls him with games of chance, and enables him to buy decadent foods and flashy jewels- for a short time. Unfortunately, it's all downhill from there. Promising himself that he'll break out of his debt in the next game, he loses over and over, until his terrible luck becomes widely known. All too late, he realizes his prized jewels are cursed. Unable to remove them and compelled to continue trying his luck, he travels from lair to lair, trying to avoid debt collectors as he goes.

While some dragons say that his easy charm comes across as sleazy, he prefers to think that his charisma is his saving grace. After all, it allows him to borrow from many a passing dragon who takes pity on him without realizing his habits. But of course, the dragon he falls in love with is immune to such flattery. Determined as he is to win her over, their paths only cross once from time to time. Each time, he spends as much time as he can with her, and each time, she moves on. But she never rejects his advances, either.

That's why, when he hears that Etain is settling down in a ruined lair, he thinks this might be his chance to start over.
