Etain hatches without any particular talents. Found lacking compared to other promising hatchlings, she soon finds herself left by the wayside. Angry and confused, she is determined not to let things end this way. She asks an older dragon to mentor her in hunting and tracking. She learns slowly, but steadily, and over time begins to find ways to incorporate her magic into the hunt. It is only after her skills develop that her parents take an interest in her. Disdainful of their praise, Etain sets out alone.

And for some time, alone she stays. Catching game to sell to passing caravans, she is able to fill her own needs without much trouble. And that is enough, she tells herself.

As soon as she meets Diarmuid, she can tell that his sweet words are a thin guise over his scheming greed. What she isn't expecting is his persistence. As he begs and bothers other dragons to help with his growing debt, it becomes increasingly clear that there is little Etain can offer him. Even so, he always finds a way to show up in her life again.

By the time she's ready to put down roots, she knows it's only a matter of time before he settles in with her.
