Biography
While The Wizard, Veles, is very much in the habit of copulating, he is not at all in the habit of keeping offspring. Most are given up as sacrifices and acolytes so that the Arcanist will grant him magical boon, or else sold to pay for ingredients and equipment, with no regard as to what the buyer wants them for. He took one look at Daela's clutchmate, however, and was smitten with her, drawn to her appearance and sensing great potential in her as a magic-user. He decided that she would make the perfect apprentice. Although Daela's bright, "rotten-egg" color-scheme and less than charismatic demeanor "turned [him] off his breakfast," he decided that she, too, could stay to keep her sister company. He did not even officially name her, merely referring to her as, "Eggs."
Growing up in her sister's shadow was not easy. If her father spoke to her at all, it was usually to demand her to fetch something, reprimand her harshly, remind her that she was not as good as her sister, or to tell her to get out of his sight. Her sister didn't make things much easier, either. While she thought their bickering was all in good fun, and that they were both equally fond of each other, she didn't see how much Daela was mistreated, this merely being an accepted fact of life for her.
In the end, Daela named herself, a name that means, "to separate from one's family," from Old English adǽlan, meaning "to divide, separate, part." She is on a perpetual quest to strengthen her magical abilities, which is an uphill battle for someone with so little natural talent. She insists that she is doing it for herself, but she also claims that she tries to cover her bright markings with dark apparel because she doesn't care for her "cheery" coloration either, and that she chose a Storm Seeker familiar because it was "practical."
"My father says [my sister] was born lucky. He says I was lucky to be born. I don't need luck, though. I've always had to struggle and fight, and that's made me strong. It made me who I am."
