Lineage

Biography

The others giggled and snorted at her, but Snow didn’t care. She kept bouncing around them in a slow circle, “But it’s so much fun to fly!”

“That’s just silly,” one of the other hatchlings said again, “We can’t even leave the lair, yet.”

“Can too!” Snow insisted, “I’ll show you!”

The others laugh and flapped their wings are her. “Silly Snow!”

“We keep telling you!”

Snow spun in a circle, “Ok, see you later then!” She couldn’t wait to go fly again! Skipping paws carried her across the lair and between the amused grown-ups’ legs. The other hatchlings laughed at her for being silly. The grown-ups smiled and chuckled softly at her for being ‘adorable.’ Grown-ups were weird.

Grown-ups were also too big to fly her way. The south edge of the lair was a carefully tended mess of plants and dirt. Snow dug her white claws in and started climbing. A couple tight spots had to be wriggled through, and one she had to stretched her jewel-speckled white wings ahead of her so she could fit. The vines sometimes claimed a feather, but that’s what happened on adventures!

The sun grew stronger the higher up she climbed, and the smells changed. Meat and bugs and foliage and dragon faded and were replaced by new smells, exiting and bright smells. Snow didn’t have words for them all yet, but the grown-ups promised her someday she would.

But the smells weren’t the best part. Snow stretched up to dig her claws in that final branch and hauled herself up. Into the breeze. Snow carefully planted all four of her feet, then threw her nose up into that glorious moving air and let her golden eyes close. Yes. Yes, this was it.

Slowly, slowly Snow raised her wings, cupping her feathers to catch that wind. With a delighted little squee Snow tensed her legs, then sprang in her mind. She could feel the wind carrying her wings and helping her soar so high and far away from the lair to the strange places she saw in her dreams. Silly them. Snow kept her eyes closed so she could see the wonders speeding by down below as she flew on.
