He was there the day it happened. The day their star drew a curtain of clouds and left the world a desolate cold. The warmth they forgot to cherish had spoiled them, not a single one of them had known a day this cold. The wind had picked up, he realized, the week before it happened. The sun had also seemed dimmer, sadder. And as if understanding what was coming, a week before it happened, the birds stopped singing. A few days before, the forest cleared out of animals. Numan had emerged to find silence. No bunnies snuffing around their burrows, no birds soaring the skies, no deer grazing on grass. Nothing. Funnily enough, it was the brightest day they had had in weeks. The sun beamed at them as the lazy breeze rustled the grass. The trees swayed, their leaves like windchimes of nature. They were saying goodbye and Numan hadn't known. The next day, it rained. Torrents of rain poured from layers of clouds in the sky.

Months later, Numan trudged through that same forest, except instead of lively green, he was only met with unbroken tones of greyish white. A blanket of lifeless cold covered the ground around him. The horizon, now devoid of viridian, seemed to stretch on forever. The trees around him were a sickly ash grey, like the very essence of life had been pulled out of them. Their barren, scraggly branches swung limply with the wind. Hs scales had dulled from being buffeted with frigid snow.
