Zanni was always a bit of a problem dragon, even among the Harlequins. She'd been made aware of the vicious gifts of their lineage from a young age, as all her siblings were. But instead of embracing her nature, she resented it. She isolated herself from her family, and, as soon as she heard of a clan looking for a Harlequin bodyguard, she left them permanently. The journey was long, and she undertook it by herself. Without the tempering effects of community (essential for most Harlequins), Zanni began to deteriorate. She'd always had some trouble with the violence that lay under the surface of her subspecies, but alone, her inner conflict only grew. Her mental state started to spiral: her resentment would grow intense enough to trigger her Harlequin state, and when she came out of this, her self-hatred at seeing what she'd done would soon tip her back into that bloodlust again. After the arduous journey, Zanni arrived at Clan Concord a wreck. At first, shock rippled through the clan at her arrival. Eris had hired a bodyguard: a vicious predator that was loyal to a fault. This shaking dragon, barely a teenager, did not fit the bill. This only worsened after Zanni shifted into her Harlequin state soon after arriving, attacking one of the border guards, and having to be restrained until she calmed down. When she was brought to the council room of the clan, she expected to be sent away. She knew that she likely wouldn't survive the journey home, but at this point, she didn't care. To her shock, however, she was met with compassion, rather than rejection. Eris asked what had happened, what help she needed, what they could do to take care of her. Slowly, though not easily, Eris helped Zanni build up a community in their clan. Zanni began to visit the clan counsellors, Lapis and Peridot, regularly. Aureola, a Necromancer skilled in mental rather than physical illnesses, became both a professional help and a close friend to Zanni. She met other dragons in the clan who'd struggled with difficult powers or self-destructive tendencies, and found relief in sharing her experiences. And as she trained with the clan fighters, she found an outlet for her feelings, as well as a sense of control over the more violent side of herself. In her time at the clan, she also discovered a love for the theatre. Not only did it nurture the first positive connection she'd felt to her circus history, but it formed a bridge between the two sides of herself. She jarred a little at first with her expected place as Eris's bodyguard, but settled in a lot more when she imagined it as a role for her to play. Now she happily shadows Eris when she travels, looming and louring and generally making herself a visible threat, ensuring, with her presence and her latent Harlequin nature, that her friend and charge is safe. ▬▬ ADDITIONAL ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬

| Harlequins are known for their violent tendencies, despite their meek demeanor. They're a vicious predator who, were it not for their highly social nature, would spend all their energy hunting down and shredding other dragons. But they enjoy company and they're loyal to a fault. If you manage to befriend a Harlequin, you will end up with one of the best bodyguards this side of Sorienth can offer. |
