it seems that i have been cursed. it's always been this way. my sight is of nothingness, spare the few sparks and squiggles that sometimes dance in front of my vision, as if taunting me. it's not necessarily the worst.. people treat me with care and kindness, but in the back of my head is a whisper that tells me it's out of pity. i didn't ask for this. who would? i hear my peers be praised every day. i hear them laugh at each other, tease each other. i feel alone - but i don't show it. i'm part of the royal guard, after all. i've learned how to discern the speed of talons, the strength of tails, the proximity of a dragon to my body. my duel partners never speak, as if afraid that uttering a word will give away some kind of key weakness - it only fuels to make me feel somber, knowing that they'll happily speak and taunt other peers while sparring. it frustrates me. my teeth snap around a neck-plate. i stand by my queen each day - i've been granted the position of defending her right flank due to my capabilities. for as long as i've been entrusted to this position, she hasn't been attacked, so perhaps i serve more as a frightening guard dog - though it does seem to work. the most harassment she receives comes in the form of questions, just out of reach of my jaws. when i raise my wings the slightest amount, they seem to take the hint and back off. my queen rests her tail beside mine, as if to silently thank me. it serves little to calm my mind. it's been a year now, as her guard. i've been nicknamed 'silent ice' by the general population. i presume it's from how little i speak to anyone other than my queen. is it that much of an issue that it's worthy of a nickname? my mother told me stories of the guards who came before, how they rarely spoke to the clan under a presumption that any wasted breath was less breath for a fight. i thought of it true - and i do live by the notion. i feel alone, but it's alright. my waking hours are spent in the radiating warmth of my queen. being near her - there's always a scent of sunshine and nature. it relaxes my otherwise tensed muscles, but not so much that i won't be poised to strike at a moment's notice. she finds me in the gardens one day, when it's a day for the other pair of guards to be at her side - but she ushers them off, approaching me. i sit by flowers. the only evidence of i betray of knowing she's approaching is a twitch of my ear - but she seems to ignore it, sitting next to me. a moment of silence is shared. "my queen," i began, breaking the silence. "am i worthy to be at your side?" i could feel her perk up, her head tilt to the side. it was a shame i couldn't see her face. i knew she was a spiral, i knew she had an aura of warmth, but i didn't know how beautiful she was. i would never be able to know the color of her eyes, the shade of her scales. it saddened me. my queen laid her tail on mine. "what makes you think you'd be anything less than worthy? i chose you for a reason." this.. this took me by surprise. i'd always presumed i was chosen by some other individual of the monarchy, perhaps the head guard. i bowed my head slightly, closer to the flowers, inhaling their scent to ease my nerves. "i see." i still felt as if i was less than a dragon, but learning she hand-picked me from the garden of my clan was new information. it made me feel.. important. worthy. "my queen, thank you." for the first time, i felt someone smile at me. the clinking of scales colliding as an expression was warped was something i'd only heard between friends speaking - my heart seemed to alight in response. she stood, extending an arm to me, as if offering to help me stand - not that i needed it. i took her talons in mine regardless, as a gesture of good faith. she's warm. "would you like to get something to eat with me?" my queen offers, leading me back along the path. "i would love to, my queen." |
