ABOUT.
Kaycee is perfectly fit to her place in her community, her clan, and the world, and she will do everything in her power to make sure not a hair goes out of place. Being born with ambition and given the natural ability to understand others on a deep level, Kaycee created her life around gaining as much as she can from others through trade and quiet manipulation. What better creature to run sales than a mind reader? And what better creature could there be besides the bony, slim, and utterly fascinated light dragon to find a home in the mysterious and questionable wasteland of plague where nothing is ever as it seems?

IMPRESSIONS.
The self-ordained leader of trade for the Cruximen clan, Kaycee is honored and respected by her clanmates and fellow council members for her people skills and solutions to difficult problems. Respected- but not beloved. The skydancer earned her place at the top and refuses to let anyone forget it, to an obnoxious degree. Most clanmates are annoyed at how she keeps herself out of their lives and business as if she’s avoiding a disease, assuming she believes herself too high and mighty to interact with those beneath her. But her work with the clan’s excess goods is done well, bringing the clan vital resources they can’t make themselves, so her behavior can be put up with.

They’re not wrong in their assumptions. She does avoid them for a petty reason- she takes no interest in normal dragonkind. New clan members catch her interest until she knows all there is to learn from them, and then cast aside. There is only one dragon- one almost dragon, that is- who has kept her captivated and motivated to socialize…

PAST.
Hounds are meant to have leaders.

From the moment she reached adulthood, Kaycee had that lesson burned into her mind. It is difficult for a skydancer, a mind reader of sorts, to ignore the impact of their words on the emotions and state of the dragons around them. Most of her kind let this ability get the better of them, rarely using it to avoid making others uncomfortable. Or, as Kaycee calls it, giving up potential. Embrace what you’ve been given, and adapt! Why avoid power merely because others can’t do what you can?

She’s traveled all around the world, amassing a fortune of experience while living comfortably from the profits of her exchanges. With her needs met, her curiosity spread beyond the dragons that she’d come to know so closely, back to the nature she tended to avoid in preference of worn routes and roads. Any questions she’d had about how dragons ticked were answered, tested, and utilized for her gain (gently, though- there is no need to make enemies, no need to cause offense. No need for excess built on the backs of others). So what next? What else could her mind be given to chew on? She was too intelligent to sit idle for long.

The next frontier took preparation to greet. Adventuring, hiking into regions where cities and towns were replaced with tribes of mostly feral dragons, and beastclan civilizations hidden from dragon’s prying eyes. Ruins, monsters- intrigue in its finest form. The value of such curiosities was something Kaycee coveted as well as their discovery, and she gained a reputation of a rare goods and artifact trader among her common resting points on her journeys. But now, with sights set on nothing but more knowledge, more curiosity, the money mattered far less…

Nature was simple enough to traverse. Light’s domain was vast and mostly empty, the only interesting parts being far too dangerous to get close to. Shadow took her years to conquer- and brought her over to plague. Roaming along the bramble wall between the flights for days on end, a million questions formed- how could something so vile exist, and exist with life within it? How could dragons come from somewhere like that, and what lay at its core? What kind of world could the land of flesh be?
She became stuck in her ponderings. Merely visiting and then returning from such a place would be difficult, far too difficult. That world was a gamble to travel through, isolated and toxic as it was. No, to survive and have room to explore, she would need to remain… But she didn’t have the skills to do so, and no interest in gaining them herself. She wasn’t made to be a hunting hound.

So she’d find one, and keep it. Hounds were meant to have masters. She’d always expected to run into a mirror pack, a small clan, some weak willed but capable group she could seed herself into, bettering their lives in exchange for caring for hers. What she didn’t expect… was something so fascinating to appear from the air. It took her breath away, the last scraps of hot muggy air squeezed from her lungs, when she finally found a creature who never wanted to be known.

A creature, somewhat a wildclaw and somewhat a… jackal? Hound? Hound would do- its head swayed as it sniffed like one, and the fine fur where she was accustomed to seeing scales seemed coarse enough. The first thought that crossed her mind was how valuable its pelt would be, of course, but the second came as a question.

Where is your mind? She reached out, as always, to read the thoughts of the creature and received… nothing back. A serenity no dragon, no being had ever displayed. Its only emotion, only feeling through its entire body, was a ripple like grass blown by the wind. It stopped in its tracks, looking over to her. It caught her scent while she sat aghast. What a fascinating thing, what a specimen, with no hostility on its mind, with no fear of her- perhaps a dragon? She presented herself, allowing it to reveal more and more through that gentle murmur of emotion. Its mood was so quiet that its thoughts shone through, rustling the grass of the mind. It seemed to like her…

Her assumptions held true as she spoke to Apostata, asking short-cut questions and receiving answers she didn’t expect to be able to understand. She nearly begged xer to come with her, longing to know more about the hound, where xe came from, and if there were more like xer. Over time, this fascination became a deep-rooted respect towards the bipedal creature.

Years passed with the two of them in a partnership, Apostata learning more about the civilized world’s benefits and drawbacks while Kaycee benefitted from the labors that xe could complete with shocking ease. The sheer excess the trapper- yes, trapper, as she called xer, having no better label for what xe did to the wild animals xe tracked down (Watching Apostata hunt was like watching a floracat toy with a cornered pocketmouse) produced was more than xe would ever need, leaving Kaycee plenty of goods to barter, swap, and sell to make their way and keep in good graces with a clan. She never cared for their members, their name, or their numbers- all she wanted was loyalty. Her and her hound would only stay with those who would permiss their presence without questions.

Questions that she couldn't answer, Apostata didn't seem to care enough to listen to, and most importantly- that they alone knew about each other.

Her precious hound is her jewel from the wastes, who sniffed her out from the bushes. And she, perhaps a little foolishly, believes that she leashed xer. From those depthless eyes and the rapid response to her commands, what else would she be led to believe?
