The Watanabe Family is well known inside the Himikoro Province as the premier brewers of sake for hundreds of miles. They're a very old family, having rarely wavered from their ancient art no matter how many competitors have arisen and how popular said competitors have become. Kiyo was another in the long line, destined to continue producing the iconic drink. Fortunately for her- unlike some of her contemporaries- she very much found fulfilment in continuing the work.

Due to her family's lucrative position, she was able to freely roam about the Tenkubashi Palace fairly often as a child. She was very young when she first met a girl of her same age. She knew that the little girl must be important, because she had the big fox ears that her mother told her made someone royalty. Still, she didn't fully understand what that meant or why it was important- it just so happened to be the detail that caught her attention that day. So off she went to talk to the little girl. The two of them would spend the rest of the day together, and when she told her parents of what had happened, they lit up with delight.

They were delighted, beyond delighted, that their daughter had just so happened to befriend the beloved princess Moyasukami, the second in line to the Solar Throne. Kiyo was urged to continue getting close to her; it's simple business, really. If Moyasukami came to like Kiyo, then when she was older perhaps she would help supress their competitors. Kiyo, obviously, didn't really understand this either. When she was old enough to, she continued to disregard it, disgusted by the idea of using someone in such a way.

The two of them were close for much of their young lives, up until Moyasukami ran away to join her brother in the Wasteland, both of them fleeing the political obligations of arranged marriages. Kiyo was, like many others, heartbroken by the loss of her friend. Quietly, she moved from the outer palace grounds and moved home. She took over the family business, letting her parents move to Sanariku, and she opened up a small stall in the marketplace.

They had always operated mostly for the nobles, those who could fork out the appropriate treasure for a taste of perfected sake. She didn't like this idea much and decided she would lower the prices to allow more people to try their brew. This made her popular with the locals, though it also made her a target for the local gang, the Zasshu.

Kiyo is close with the other owners of market stalls, including Akihiko, Joji, Suzuka, and Hyori. Whilst not as overtly serious as Akihiko, she easily shifts gears between being the voice of reason and suggesting completely outlandish ideas just for fun.
