GRAVEYARD GAOLERS
As we all know, The Plaguebringer loathes the undead. Despite, or perhaps because of this, millions of plaguelings practice necromancy. What is a god to do? Well, if you’re The Filthy One, you corrupt the newly-migrating Gaolers and adapt them until they’re perfect for withstanding the Wasteland and keeping pesky necromancers at bay. When threats and pestilence don’t work, a hulking dragon modeled after the terrifying Graveyard Guardian of old just might do the trick. Most Graveyard Gaolers interpret The Plaguebringer’s disdain for Emperors as extending to all undead, and seek to cull, contain, and prevent more undead from being formed. They take their job very seriously, and many genuinely believe that the existence of the undead is a blight upon the world |

PHYSICAL ATTRIBUTES
Graveyard Gaolers look like most Gaolers with a few key differences. They have stronger forequarters than hindquarters, with a slightly sloping back. Their front paws are extremely strong with long claws, useful for digging graves, searching for roots and tubers, and subduing struggling undead. Graveyard Gaolers are capable of standing or even walking for short distances on their hind legs. Their running speed is slower than most Gaolers, as their chosen prey the undead tend to be slow, but they are still capable of terrifying bursts of speed when charging. Graveyard Gaolers are pursuit predators and are tireless and implacable as the hordes of undead they hunt. Graveyard Gaolers are covered in shaggy, long, coarse black or brown fur, which protects them both from the elements and the bites of the undead. Graveyard Gaolers use their natural armaments to subdue undead and necromancers alike. Graveyard Gaolers with Shardflank, Scorpion, or Gnarlhorns will impale smaller undead and necromancers on their antlers or spikes for transport back to the graveyard-and as a warning. This practice led to the nickname of "Shrikebears". A Graveyard Gaoler's strongest sense is their sense of smell, and especially canny individuals are said to be able to estimate the exact date a corpse died by the smell of decomposition. |
BACKSTORY
Mallory was hatched in the unforgiving wasteland of Reclaimer's Glacier in the frozen depths of the Southern Icefield. Mallory had a fairly normal childhood, growing up in a small clan of retired Graveyard Gaolers. From a young age it was expected that Mallory would follow in his parents' footsteps, and from a young age he was taught the ways of the Graveyard Gaolers, initially set on joining the Sentinel order with the intention of staying close to his family. His parents, of course, were overjoyed with Mallory's interest in their cause, and they were more than happy to support Mallory, whichever order he pledged alliegence to.
Once Mallory was old enough he accompanied his parents to the annual Hellwell Undercroft Conference. Mallory had never travelled outside of his home before, and though the journey was long and difficult, Mallory fell in love with the idea of travelling around the different regions of Sornieth, absorbing and enjoying different customs while still being able to fight for his beliefs. The conference itself only served to reinforce this idea. Mallory met many different Gaolers at the conference and gathered as much knowledge about the different orders and sects as possible, further impressing his parents and solidifying his resolve for the cause.
Finally the day came where Mallory was ready to set off on his journeys around the lands. Mallory set off early for the Hellwell Undercroft to register in the Seeker order. Mallory recalled the journey he'd taken every year with his parents and how much he enjoyed it, but when he took the journey alone he felt different... lonely. His familiar, Iero was a fine companion, but Mallory had never really been alone before, and it wasn't long before homesickness set in. Still, Mallory forged forth, through the Starfall Isles until he reached the border of the Scarred Wasteland. Once Mallory crossed the border, something within him shifted. He was as far from home as he'd ever been, but somehow he felt like he was home again, and in that moment Mallory decided that this was where he wanted to stay.
Mallory reached the Hellwell Undercroft early in the morning and registered himself into the Seninel order, happy with his choice, but assured that he was allowed to change his order after just a year. Mallory was assigned a large graveyard right on the border; both within the Wandering Contagion in the Scarred Wasteland and the Starwood Strand in the Starfall Isles - in fact, from Mallory's home the tops of the purple trees were visible on the horizon on a clear day (which were admittedly few and far between). Mallory set up in a small shack on the outskirts of the graveyard and began his new role immediately.
His days started in the afternoon, being that the undead were far more active at night (a cliche that Mallory was expecting, honestly). He patrolled the graveyard, ensuring no necromancers could enter the graveyard, and that any undead shambling through could not get to the border, and that any undead raised from the Arcane side could not get close to civilisation. Mallory enjoyed his work, and there was much to do, being that the graveyard straddled the border between regions, but he still found himself quite lonely and unused to his new solitary lifestyle.
A short time after Mallory settled, a representative from the Sentry order visited to ensure that Mallory was happy with his lot and to assuage any concerns he may have. Mallory admitted to struggling with a lack of supplies and civilised interaction. The representative drew him a map to an upcoming clan only a couple of miles within the Starwood Strand who would be willing to trade supplies and were understanding and supportive of the Graveyard Gaoler's mission. With this new information, Mallory set off into the forest where he met with Clan Cynefin and quickly allied himself with them.
Life got much easier for Mallory. He visits Clan Cynefin at least once a week to both trade supplies and to visit his new friends. The graveyard has truly become Mallory's home. He enjoys adorning his shack with trinkets and decorations he's collected and made, and he enjoys hosting his parents several times a year, as well as seeing them at the Hellwell Undercroft Conference before Riot of Rot every year. Mallory is unsure of what his future holds; perhaps he will go home to Reclaimer's Glacier to raise his own hatchlings, or perhaps he will request a formal invitation to join Clan Cynefin. Either way, Mallory is happy with his life and looks forward to every new day.
