ABOUT. Birch grows up stealing cattle under the cover of darkness and selling them off as quickly as possible to shady buyers. His magical education extended no further than casting the occasional rock slash or clumsy boulder bolt--he spared not a second thought to this until one of his fathers brought him to town to purchase supplies. They were resting up at the old saloon nearby when a gang of scrappy outlaws decided to rob it. Birch had just downed his whiskey and was about to make a quick and quiet exit with his father when a dragon clad in black--a newly-arrived stranger, he later found out--burst through the doors, spread their claws out at the would-be robbers, and cast the most powerful congeal spell Birch had ever seen. Frost washed over the saloon, and when it cleared, the outlaws were sealed in blocks of ice and everyone else was unharmed. The two of them made it out of the town without a hitch, but Birch could still feel the chill in his bones hours later. And something else had changed: he'd had gotten his first taste of true magic. There was no going back after that. IMPRESSIONS. Bright-eyed and bushy-tailed; what Birch lacks in talent, he makes up for in sheer determination. It's easy to pick him out in a crowd of academics--he's built like a ranch hand (or a cattlerustler, if you want to be pedantic): sun-worn, agile, strong-clawed. PAST. Children of the cattle rustlers (though one of them has more experience in peddling teas than stealing livestock) are raised, as one might expect, doing some less-than-honourable deeds. Certainly not murder, but most are partial to robbery to get what they want. Of course, most of them pick up the skills of their parents’ trade: cattle rustling. Those who dislike the physical aspect discover other ways to make themselves useful, finding ways to alter brands, steal calves, deflect suspicion at auctions. Though, there’s nothing quite like stampeding cattle under cover of night, adrenaline pumping in your veins and wind howling in your ears. And after, watching the sunrise flood the plains in red and gold. They can chase whatever fate they want, seek whatever fortune lies in wait-- an honest life will never feel this good.
