Biography

Glaucus
Diver
Neutral Good

PkKAmaj.png
Named after the beastclan's sea god and forever fascinated with what lies beneath the waves, Glaucus was unfortunate enough to be hatched an Arcane dragon; no matter how much he wants to be able to swim, he sinks like a rock. And yet, while the others of his flight look up towards the stars in their desire to discover the unknown, he continues to look down into the water. A true arcane dragon, not even the restrictions of his body would be enough to prevent Glaucus from sating his curiosity.

And so, trapped on dry land, Glaucus turned to the warping energies of the Arcane, searching for a solution to his plight. Countless hours of unsafe experimentation eventually bestowed him with a functional set of gills, at the minor cost of losing his voice when not well-hydrated.

A small price to pay for the freedom to explore the waters, of course. To see the multicoloured corals, to mingle with the schools of shimmering fish. To flee in terror from the truly massive things that live in the deep ocean. Glaucus would gladly share his gill-growth spell with other dragons so that they too could enjoy the many underwater wonders of Sornieth... if he had any idea what magic had actually granted them to him.

And while he did never learn to swim, walking on the ocean floor is close enough in his books.

The story behind Glaucus' name isn't very long. His parents wanted to show just how superior dragons were to the beastclans, so they named him after one of their false gods. How embarrassing it must be to have a hatchling put on the same level as your deity! Glaucus really doesn't care, or have too many gripes with the beastclans. He just wishes he had a more normal name, like Zqfmgb.

Currently, he works for Delyth, scouting the ocean floor for relics for the land-preferring dragon to study. This usually requires a bit of stealth, as the local Maren population are not particularly fond of him. He's not sure why; it's not like he ever goes anywhere near their villages. Maybe they're trying to steal his pearl? How dare they! Glaucus doesn't try to steal their souls, so they have no excuse for stabbing him and trying to steal his. Luckily, Delyth is more than happy to examine any spears that Glaucus unwillingly picks up while running away.

Recently, he's picked up a weapon in an attempt to protect himself on these expeditions. Not that's he's got any clue how to use it, but waving the trident around sometimes wards off enemies. Other times he just accidentally smacks himself with it and then hopes to be able to flee while the Maren are laughing at him.

Since Glaucus' gills aren't exactly natural, he does have to worry about drying out while on land. He won't die or anything, but it will be unpleasant for him, and he'll only be able to make weak coughing sounds instead of speech. If he happens to be in his lair at the time, he keeps a large tank of water that he can dunk his entire head into in such an emergency. It's up to you whether that or the coughing is more disconcerting when in the middle of a conversation.

Back before he grew gills, Glaucus's desire to see the sea nearly drowned him on multiple occasions. It was Brizo who saved him every time, both by dragging him out of the ocean and by providing a place to rest. He's still kept up the friendship they fostered then, only partially due to the fact that he keeps hurting himself and could use the convenient medical aid. As thanks to her, Glaucus makes sure to donate treasure frequently to Brizo's shrine, and thus is perennially broke. It's lucky for him that Seagully always has a surplus of kelp that he can eat, even if it tastes like rubber.

Speaking of Seagully, she's another of his friends, and Glaucus often tries to help with her gardening. Sadly, he can barely keep a single cactus alive, let alone an entire kelp field. Said long-suffering cactus lives in a pot in his lair -- thus Glaucus will often meet an angry Rhys who's recently returned from watering it.

Ceto
Seafloor Scavenger
Chaotic Neutral

PkKAmaj.png
Dragonkind think they know about the maren; a sea-dwelling people who build underwater cities in the swallow ocean and trade along the coast. But not even those maren know much about Ceto's people: the maren of the deep. Few of them ever swim close enough to the surface to feel even the most diffused ray of sunlight. Nobody knows if they are few in number, or more numerous than the dragons and surface-bound beastclans combined. Except perhaps, Glaucus.

Well, no, he doesn't know much about them. But he is one of the very few who can call a deep maren a friend. He met Ceto on one of his scavenging missions, expecting to have to swim for his life yet again. But to his surprise, Ceto had no interest in violence. In fact, they were there for the exact same reason Ceto was. Grabbing lost artefacts that should probably belong to somebody else. The two of them have common cause in that nearly everybody else in this part of the ocean wants to introduce them to the pointy end of a spear.

When Ceto is around, the two of them work together to hunt treasures. In silence, usually. Partially because neither of them are that talkative, but mostly as Ceto much prefers sign language to the spoken word. It made communication difficult at first, but Glaucus picked it up at a speed that surprised even himself. The weird little fins he grew as a side effect of his gill mutation turned out to be quite useful for Ceto's version of signing.

Despite freely answering any questions that Ceto might have about surface matters, Glaucus has learned very little about them or where they come from in exchange. Glaucus would say that's because Ceto's secretive, but perhaps the real reason is because as he believes Ceto is secretive, Glaucus has never bothered to ask. Glaucus has heard many things about Ceto's pet though, a strange little deep-sea creature named Robak that they care about very much. It makes Glaucus feel a little guilty about not taking better care of his cactus.

The maren of the Deep, who live alongside the undertides? No, Ceto's from much deeper than that.
