Blessed be our Mother, she who gives us strength.

Sirona was born in one of the temples of the Filthy One, where she was baptized with a bite from their sacred onyx cobra.

The first time Sirona complained about the way her skin itched, the reverend mother took her aside and told her that every disease was truly a blessing in disguise.

The Plaguebringer, she said, sent them sickness out of the kindness of her heart. She showed her love for them, her red-eyed children, by testing their resolve against her own might, and they were truly blessed to have a Mother as dedicated as she.

And in order to further their Mother's cause, to spread her love throughout dragonkind--they had a duty, as her children, to cultivate her blessings.

So as the hard, green gems began to blossom on her hide, Sirona took her words to heart and prayed for them to flourish.

Blessed be our Mother, she who created disease in order to test our love for her.

When the growth crept up her neck, she did not protest. As it broke skin between its clusters, she stole away to the darkest corners of the temple to hide her tears.

It was deemed a curse when it took her eyes, and by the time it began to steal her breath, there was nothing the reverend mother could do to help her.

Instead, she told Sirona that Plaguebringer was calling her, and that come light the next morning, the congregation would take her to the Wyrmwound and allow her to return to their Mother's loving embrace.

Sirona nodded her agreement, and then slipped out of the infirmary during the night.

She walked blindly, only knowing the passing of days from the rise and fall of the ground's temperature. Sirona knew it was only a matter of time before she would be forced to succumb to the heavy weight of her disease, but in a desperate attempt to sustain her faith, she prayed for a miracle.

Blessed be our Mother, she who sees potential in all her children, no matter how pitiful.

Sirona did not see who rescued her. She only heard the wheels of their caravan as it approached, the sound of a high, cheerful voice asking for her name, the melodic, ringing laugh that followed as they quickly berated themselves for their silly, silly question.

She passed out afterwards, thanking her Mother for salvation.

The next time she awoke, it would be to the sight of blinding white. For a moment, she thought she had died, but then it spoke, commending her on surviving the treatment.

In the next few days, Sirona would learn several things about her savior. Firstly, her name, Sieghilde—and how she had saved Sirona's life with something she called a “modified anti-venom,” derived from the very species of onyx cobra that had bitten Sirona so long ago. Secondly, of the hospital she founded in the Tangled Wood, aptly named The Wings of Mercy.

Thirdly, that she could use an extra set of claws if Sirona had nowhere to go. The hospital was new, and while Sieghilde ran it perfectly well on her own, eventually, her clan, the Vogelzang, would grow, and in turn, so would her workload.

At first, Sirona refused. She was ashamed that she had scorned the Plaguebringer's blessing and sought a way to rid herself of it rather than join the diety in death. She thanked the doctor for her offer, but intended to live the rest of her life in exile, to repent for her ungratefulness.

But, Sieghilde argued, didn't the Plaguebringer hold the will to survive above all else?
And Sirona thought about the ideals upon which she had been raised. All her life, she thought the only way to honor her diety was by creating disease and spreading them to the rest of dragonkind. Back at the temple, Sirona could've accepted her fate and allowed herself to be returned to her Mother, but she didn't. Instead she survived, and now she had been given the chance to further her Mother's ideals.

This, she decided, was how she would honor the Plaguebringer. Sirona would accept the doctor's offer and become a healer, testing the resilience of her brethren's diseases by directly opposing them, acting as an extension of the Plaguebringer's will.

Blessed be our Mother, she who smiles upon the survivors, for they are the ones who will spread her word.
