It started with an emergency. Ghislaine remembers rifling through the shelves of the infirmary, trying to decipher her mother’s impossible handwriting on the tiny labeled jars as she did her best to ignore the wails of pain from the injured warrior her mother was tending to behind her. Eilert, the warrior, stumbled upon to their clan in the early morning, bleeding from a large gash in his stomach and repeating something (a name, she thinks) over and over like a mantra. Her mother rushed him into her infirmary to tend to his wound, but he refused to stay still long enough for her to do anything, so she sent Ghislaine into the wood to gather a handful of leechroot mushrooms she could form into a few sleeping tablets. She’s gone for a minute, maybe two when she remembers the jar of dried leechroot mushrooms she saw on one of the shelves. Ghislaine returns to the sight of the male Coatl on the bed, out like a light with clean bandages wrapped around his middle and bruises that were quickly healing on his brow. Her mother was hovering him with glowing palms, muttering quietly under her breath. The side of her face purpling quickly and the gash forming on her stomach was staining her clean, white feathers a dark, dark red. There were pieces of a broken porcelain jar hastily swept under the bed. The Pearlcatcher lingered in the doorway, committing the scene to memory. -- Ghislaine tried the trick on her twin brother the very next day. He’d fallen in the brambles, and his face was a bloody, bloody mess. She pressed her hand to his cheek and shushed him gently, reducing his sobs to hiccups before closing her eyes and uttering the words that fell from her mother’s lips the night before. When she opened her eyes again, Anvindr was staring at her in horror. His face was un-scarred and immaculate, but when she pressed a palm to her own face, it came away red. |
