After the... event that was Ross, Gilruth buckled down to refine the delicate craft of creating life from nothing, and sought to create another dragon that wouldn't hurl obscenities at him if he so much as breathed in her direction. This time, his seals were neat and his magic was smooth, but the sudden feeling of his own sense of self being ripped away stopped him dead in his tracks. Vostok's first act on animation was to bury the shark used to create him, though he couldn't explain why he wanted to do that.

Vostok is not afflicted with the pain that Ross lives with, at the cost of being outwardly emotionally distant and cold. It's not that he doesn't feel emotions, not at all, but the ability to understand them and express them in return is beyond him. The small snippets of self that came from Gilruth do little to help and only serve to confuse and frustrate him. After a while, he simply began to withdraw from the others, retreating to the bleak silence of the ocean to hunt whales for the clan in peace.

If it weren't for Zoot, perhaps he would be just like Scotia. Zoot, having long lost the subtlety of his breed, thought nothing of reaching out to the solitary dragon, or tagging along on hunting trips. Nor did he complain at having to explain his emotions, since it gave him an excuse to proclaim his love whenever Vostok asked. Though he's not entirely sure if what he feels in return is also love, Vostok isn't sure what else it could be.
