The Royal Guard's Lady
After Murazaki lost his mate, Absinthe, the Warden had Mr. Rye conduct a realm-wide search for a replacement.
And Azana was the one chosen. A queen among peasants. She looked good standing next to Murazaki.
"She's yours now," The Warden commanded, turning to walk away from a job well done.
Murazaki didn't even look at his newly-appointed mate. "Your wishes, my lord."
This dragon was not his Absinthe.
Absinthe was kind, and gentle, and treated all the royals of the court with grace and an air of servitude. She was humble, and sweet, and she groomed Murazaki's head feathers in just the way that he liked. She loved Murazaki with all her heart. He knew that.
But this dragon, with her fiery gaze and painted face, terrifies everyone. She snaps at the Light Slaves when their steps lag even just a few paces behind. She nearly bit Primrose's wingtip clean off when that silly spectacled derg decided it was a good idea to tousle Azana's beloved flower crown. The Warden was wrong. They were not a good match at all.
And Murazaki was certain, as the sun runs its arc another day over the Lightweaver's domain that his true love would have never left him to face his demons alone. The child they shared together, snatched away by some cruel fate, still taunts him in his dreams.
