OOO
A single banner, posted above an armor pile, gently sways in the wind. It fills you with a sense of intrigue as its very presence implores you to sit, and reflect upon the world around you.

OOODeities do not speak.

OOOTheir words, their whims, are inscribed in stone and bone and records. A few claim to speak to the divine- even as it is known that it is the exalted, alone, who can hear their eternal mothers and fathers, many dwellers of Sornieth still insist on a greater bond with their deity. The belief and loyalty other dwellers grant to these few varies and wanes across the great fractured land, but for most, faith is only a secondary facet of their long, long lives.

OOOThe dragons of Sornieth are beings of magic, flesh and bone interwoven with the grand forces which so divide the world. For this, they are given flight, they are given children, they are given strength, they are given exemplary bodies, they are given sight beyond sight. In their technicolor eyes lie their life, and somewhere between beyond and within their heavy bodies lie their souls. A miracle of circumstance, perhaps, that beside a natural landscape, beside beastly beings which walk and talk and live all the same, that beings of such divine creation and excellence can thrive and build a world to their wishes. A world that, despite their wars and their magic and their making, is not entirely their own.

OOOIt is for this reason, most suspect, that all dragons which can access their inner magic at even the most rudimentary level can take on a beastly form. So named for the bipedal forms' resemblance to the Beastclans of the world, it is through these diplomatic and dexterous bodies that most dragons can maintain equal standing with not only these Beastclans, but each other. Similar heights and telling faces, sensitive skin and uncomplicated silhouettes, all combine to create a sociable and accessible vessel through which to interact. That is not to say that draconic forms lack any merit- they're still widely valued for travel, combat, simple comfort, and pure pride in a deity-given body. Most infrastructure is adapted, magically or otherwise, to account for both beastly and draconic forms, allowing for breeds of entirely different stature and even Beastclans themselves to coexist across multiple flights.

OOOHowever, even the most efficient of tools cannot solve all problems, and despite the ability to quite truly see eye-to-eye, tensions between Beastclans and dragons remain high in many areas, while some particularly zealous draconic devouts can hardly even manage to accept individuals of different creed or breed. Most still at least maintain the common decency to not pit draconic forms again beastly forms, and take on whatever is deemed common practice, but such luxuries aren't always afforded by those with greater concerns than morals.

OOOBut, despite all its discord, the societies of today's Sornieth- a decum millennium of the Fourth Age known affectionately as the eighties- have developed into marvels of modern amenities and structure, blended with the architecture and establishments of days gone by. Technology once isolated to southeasternly deserts now exists worldwide, with radios freely dispersing noise and news, rotary telephones connecting lairs across the land, and motion pictures finally coming into their own vivid, living color. In flatter regions, gas-powered vehicles transport dragons and items in light metal frames on grand rubber wheels, while their engines are experimented with in ships and flying machines throughout the rest of the world. Magic still has its place, aiding in the sharing of old archived knowledge, research itself, and, tentatively, the development of new, more ambitious inventions. Rumors are spreading of closely guarded mechanical projects in certain flights; after all, some say the way of the future is beyond the ozone, even beyond the stars, towards those impossible cosmic eyes, though most maintain that such grand ideals would only be possible through some sort of mechanical, artificial mind. For those with their mind still down on Sornieth, however, the technological advances of today make for quite the exciting lives.

OOOSynthesizers back electric instruments, creating the soundtrack for the social masses. Artfully constructed and ornate buildings stand as neighbors to smaller, more distinct, and independent creations, especially in more volatile regions, though they house company all the same. Company, which must be said, that could be mistaken for no other.

OOODragons are clad in fashions old and new; leather, furs, and boots transcend class, with jewelry and bonewear obviously appealing to any discerning dragon, but there's no shortage of variety beyond that. Apparel is an art among dragons of any flight, something to set apart one's sensibilities and even their devotion with grand gestures and personalization. Among the general populace, patterned button-ups are in no short supply, paired with pants and skirts alike, made from all variety of materials. For the slightly more refined, however, a suit can make the dragon; though the working lot with their tasseled jackets, chaps, and ten gallon hats may disagree. Rulers sport whatever decor their flight deems ornate, warriors whatever armor their flight deems protective, priests whatever garbs their flight deems devout, and bards whatever outfits their troupe deems reverent. Masks take on more in some places than others, and within that in some trades more than others, but nevertheless the artistry of a good mask never fades. When identity is so personal, but features so concrete, so noticeable, so awfully damning, sometimes the only way to introduce oneself is with another's face.

OOOStill, as always, there is more to life than the physical, and the perceived. Occultism runs rampant, even beyond the expected spirituality of so many gods-fearing creatures, and curiosity some deities themselves have seemed to encourage only fuels the ever-consuming fire. The undead are well-documented, cursed by some and revered by others, and far too many practitioners seem to enjoy the concept of toying with souls, living or dead. Outside of their control, however, lie a much more mysterious threat, or, perhaps, mysterious blessing.

OOODemons and angels have long evaded explanation, despite attempted documentation since the time of Ancients. They take the bodies of dragons and Beastclans, or so it's said, and exist among them, grow beside them as children and nestmates. They belong to no deity, obey no masters but those somehow beyond Sornieth, and seem to exist for no reason other than to counter their rival anomaly. That isn't to say they don't interfere with the beings of Sornieth; demons seem to thrive off vice, dragging mortals to their sinful, indulgent levels, while angels seem to engage with simple pleasures, protecting mortals- and each other- from the vicious allure of demons.

OOOFor most, though, such occult manners are of no concern. Dragons live lives of extraordinary length- barring the unlucky few Imperials who overexert their limited, volatile magic potential to fatal ends, the magic in dragons' systems can support lives of great magical growth and sprawling family trees. It is for this reason most dragons simply maintain the company of each other, and not other species with far more limited lifespans; though through shared magic, they can often impart their extensive lifeforce on a single, selected familiar. Thus, dragons live lives of great purpose and identity, with those not becoming exalted to serve their deity remaining in Sornieth to pursue passions of art, devotion, war, love, diplomacy, business, and further. How close such passions bring them to their silent deities is long-contested, widely criticized, and speculated upon, but there is one thing which seems certain.

OOOIt is the dragons in control who dictate the will of the deities.

Your moment of reflection in front of the serene banner ends abruptly, the bustle of the camp around you snapping you back to reality.

You know that there’s plenty about the world which is still unknown to you; perhaps connecting with more dragons may be the key to expanding your horizons, or traveling to see reaches of Sornieth wholly alien to you as of yet. Even if not every corner will yield results when you come across them at first, you get the strange feeling that time will expose more and more stories and secrets, if only someone like you were to investigate.

Maybe one day, you’ll come across a better way of navigating it all…
