While many Nocturnes are happy to eat whatever scampering or skittering creatures they can find, there are those too who will be satisfied by nothing less than the blood of other dragons. Reviled by the rest of their species, these long-lived dragons form close-knit societies. Of course, there are rivalries between different covens, but there are many alliances as well. This is why, when Merlot hears about a strange new coven near the Forbidden Portal, she makes haste to investigate it.

On the night she arrives, a circus is performing. Entranced by the show, she quickly falls in love with the atmosphere of the lair. Before going to speak with their leader about a potential alliance, she asks one of the serving dragons for something to drink.

His confusion is her first hint that something is not right. She does eventually manage to get him to the back room and drink her fill, but his objections make it seem that he is unused to serving as a beverage. Perhaps the troupe's assistants aren't around the lair often enough to serve often?

Over the following weeks, Carnelian does not leave with the troupe, instead staying close by her side. Appreciating his willingness, Merlot approaches Siorys about an alliance. Their conversation is filled with implications, neither of them quite wishing to admit their vampiric status. Even so, Merlot leaves feeling hopeful about their future kinship.

As the weeks drag into months, the mind games only continue. Carnelian grows increasingly rebellious, always pushing her away at mealtimes. At one such meal, the assistant of a passing dignitary makes eye contact with her. Merlot switches her hypnotic gaze from her current meal to the passerby, and the effect takes hold. Well, she was getting tired of Carnelian anyway. Surely one assistant won't be terribly missed.
