Duskprince

Uh-oh, looks like this dusky coatl wandered a little too far from his home lair (MoonlilyluvsCas, 559581), and now he's off to see the world! If you ever feel the urge to exalt, he'd really appreciate it if you could just return him home instead, or to the 'Dragons Off to See the World' thread. If you don't want another traveler in return, you can also drop him off at the Traveling Dragon Rest Hub!

History

Duskprince always enjoyed the night. Perhaps it helped that he was born in the late evening as the sun set, but he often wondered what different parts of the world looked like in the light of the setting sun.

Truth be told, Duskprince felt anxious in a lot of light. His mind buzzed and he felt overwhelmed and overstimulated. Dusk was the only time his mind seemed to be still and at peace. Dusk was an amazing time to meditate and feel normal for just a little bit. But still, he wondered...what if he could receive different enlightenment if he was in different domains meditating during dusk? Determined to find out, Duskprince set off to discover more meaning in the world, dealing with his distracted mind during the day but determined to find more knowledge of the world regardless.

Gladeshadows

Still a bit apprehensive of leaving the nature territory so soon, Duskprince found himself wandering toward the vast swamplands that lined the ocean. He hoped that the change of area might still give him knowledge, since he was no longer in the heart of the Gladekeeper's great forests. As fate would have it, he found a small Province within the marshes that he really enjoyed; and Duskprince decided that this would be his first stop along the path of knowledge. He rented a room at an inn, then journeyed further towards the ocean so he could smell the fresh sea winds flowing in. Making himself comfortable under an ancient mangrove, Duskprince placed his talons together, closed his eyes, and began to meditate. As he had expected, this new place did in fact feel different from his home. A sweeping feeling crept across his body, and it brought such a strange, eerie sensation that he was forced to open his eyes again. To his shock, he was no longer in the swamp. He was inside a memory.

"That's interesting," a young dragon said, staring at him with wide goat-like eyes. "The beach is calm. You don't often appear near it."

"P-Pardon me?" Duskprince stammered.

"You talk," she observed. "You usually say nothing. Did you drown here?"

"Goodness no!"

"Why are you here then? You can't possibly be visible to everyone. You have a different aura. Your colors are flickering."

"What do you mean? I'm just like anyone else."

"I see now. You're not from this time. Goodbye, time traveler."

Then it was over. Minutes passed by, Duskprince just sitting there and staring blankly out at the horizon. The moon was steadily falling, so he stood up and returned to the Province so he could rest. He would continue his findings tomorrow evening after he slept through the bustling midday.

Despite his strange experience, Duskprince had a restful sleep during day hours and awoke feeling completely rejuvenated. Once again, he found his spot under the old tree and settled down to meditate. This time, however, a different trial awaited him.

"We don't have many dragons like you come this way," said a voice softly behind him.

Duskprince sighed, then looked around until he saw a lone ridgeback standing some distance away. He was around the same age as Duskprince, but something about him made him seem less lively. Maybe there was something haunting him in his past.

"My name is Glinwehr," the dragon introduced, shuffling his wings and tilting his head at Duskprince. "I've been journeying around these swamps for a long time. Was there something you were hoping to find here?"

Duskprince thought about that question, trying to come up with a suitable answer. "I suppose I'm just looking for whatever this place has to offer. Why? Can you help me?"

Glinwehr barked a small laugh. "I'm just a travelling merchant. Something tells me you aren't really looking for what I could provide. Nevertheless, you should probably be more careful when entering the swamp at night. There are things that live here. Things far less friendly than me..." His voice trailed off, as if his mind was going somewhere else, then he shook his head and focused back on the present. "The wetlands can give you many things, but its understanding does have risks." He observed Duskprince for a moment, then smiled slightly and nodded. "Here, friend," Glinwehr said, handing him a packet of tea and a small cup. "Take this for your travels. If you ever require a remedy, fix it and drink all of it. Nature will help to heal you."

After he finished speaking, the trader was gone. Duskfleet puzzled over this strange encounter, but he soon shrugged and returned to the inn again.

It was the final night of Duskprince's visit. He had returned to the mangrove for a few more evenings, but a sense of quiet had overtaken the area, as if the tree refused to share anything more with the strange star-speckled scholar. Slightly frustrated by the stubborn evergreen, Duskprince decided to try a different area that was closer to the Gladeshadow Province. He found a pocket of tall grasses surrounded by spindling conifers, and the place satisfied him so much that he determined that it was perfect and that he was destined to come here.

Nestling into the soft reeds, he closed his eyes.

Sleep must have overtaken him at some point, because he startled awake as something came threateningly close to his face. Seeing two burning lights staring at him from a void of black, he scrambled backward in a panic, immediately fearing that the shadows were about the kill him. The malevolent dark swirled toward him, releasing an ear-splitting shriek as Duskprince ducked in horror.

Time ticked by steadily, everything quiet. Trembling, Duskprince removed his claws off of his head and looked around. There was nothing. The sun was rising, and the glade was completely empty.

He was so badly frightened by the experience that he left the forest as fast as he could and went back to the sanctuary of the inn, where he lay in bed for a long time just thinking of what had happened. There was no evidence that the darkness was real, but Duskprince was not going to discard the event. It had felt real. That was enough.

He left the Province feeling shaken but otherwise perfectly fine. He had no intentions to return; all he wanted to do was fly.

Terreneuvia

Duskprince found himself soaring over the Sea of a Thousand Currents faster than he ever had. The strange encounter with the misty darkness had terrified him beyond words- so much so that he'd taken flight as soon as he regained his bearings. So there he was, left to ponder and soar over the deity-less domain.

Though curiously enough, a fog began to envelop him the farther he went. As if it's resemblance to his nightmare- or vision, or whatever that had been- wasn't putting him on edge enough, it was soon accompanied by the startling blare of a fog horn. Fighting to regain balance after the scare, Duskprince realized something- he must be close to land.

Beginning to spiral down, the white fog made way for a viridian blotch, which eventually formed into an island. It was built in a way which reminded Duskprince of his homeland- though something about the thick forests unsettled him. Perhaps he'd stay away from those, at least for now. Though soon his mind was occupied with other things, as a feathered banescale approached him as he touched down on a surpringly pristine dock.

"Hello!" She said in a chipper tone. Her lips curled back in a toothy grin, which calmed Duskprince down slightly. "What can I do for you?"

"I, um, was wondering if I could stay anywhere?" Duskprince did enjoy sleepnig out in the open, but perhaps he was in need of a more, say, sheltered sleep that afternoon. Looking around, he saw beaches that caused his mind to go fuzzy- the sand cutting through land and sea dazzled in the dimmed sunlight. He looked away quickly.

"Oh, of course." She called for a dragon, who appeared in the form of a bright yellow spiral.

"Hello there, if you'll follow me for a minute or so, I can take you to the inn here on Terreneuvia." He spoke in a soft yet energetic manner, and began to lift off the ground before Duskprince could say a word. Struggling to keep up, the coatl inquired on the name that had been dropped.

"Oh, Terreneuvia? That's the name of this island. Usually dragons plan on coming here, so we don't mention it's name right off the bat."

Duskprince didn't feel like explaining his situation, so he kept quiet.

Soon enough, they were at the door of an inn- and before he knew, he was whirred inside by the spiral and handed a key by a friendly coatl.

~

Duskprince awoke in a bed, the sun's last dying rays streaming through a window near him. Slipping out from under the duvet, he peered out of the seawater specked glass and found himself nearly face to face with the ocean. He recoiled in fear as a wave crashed a little too close for comfort, and so he backed out the room.

He gave a polite yet nervous greeting to the coatl still at the front desk, before leaving out the large door. A bell tinkled behind him as it shut. Scanning over the horizon, he saw the beaches that had dazzled him earlier. Perhaps now, as the sun set, they'd be better for him? Taking a second glance around the parts of the island he could see, he didn't encounter many other things to do- only those unsettling woods. So he began to flap his now aching wings, ready for some much needed meditation.

Once he finally set down on the sand, still warm from a day of dimmed sun, the stars were beginning to show up above. And with the comforting combination of the waves quietly crashing over the shoreline and the distant calls of various birds, he closed his eyes and began to meditate. Until he was interupted.

A cold, wet claw carefully touched his forehead, and as Duskprince was startled back into reality, he fell over into the sand. It was now cold. Perhaps some time had passed. But whether or not minutes or hours had gone by was not of his concern at the moment. A mirror, her eyes glowing bright pink, stared down at him- her dark and menacing mane of seaweed stuck on her scales and dripping the occasional salty, cold drip on Duskprince. He could barely utter out a word as the bauble on her head grew closer and closer to his face.

Until she finally withdrew, apparently having inspected the traveller enough. "Hello, what brings you to my domain?" Her voice was cold and dark, though slightly arrogant.

"I, um, was just meditating on the beach-" Duskprince was interupted yet again, this time by some gurgling that eventually turned to yelling as yet another dragon emerged from the ocean.

"Bathy, what have I told you about scaring the travellers! You know me and Morass share the beaches. Did he give you permission to terrorize them? Because I sure didn't!"

The mirror, who Duskprince now knew as Bathy (or so he thought), whipped around- hitting the coatl in the face with her cold mane. "Oh, bug off, Pterios. I was just looking at him! And you know I hate that nickname!" She snarled and placed a claw on the trident that strapped around her hip.

"Fine, Bathyphysa, my queen." Pterios' tone was dry.

"Shut up." Bathyphysa responded, before delving back into the ocean. Duskprince saw her gleaming pink eyes shoot one last glare at the mirror still on shore.

"Ah, I'm sorry about my sister. She doesn't always like to stay in the deep, where she belongs." Pterios turned to the coatl, and his gaze softened as he realized just how spooked Duskprince was. "Um, maybe you should just head back to the inn. Or, or even just leave? This island might not be for you. Y'know, spirits and stuff."

The coatl's eyes went even wider. These two quarreling siblings had been spirits? Now that he looked at Pterois closer, he did have a strange aura. Now even more terrified, Duskprince uttered a weak goodbye before taking into the skies. Was every destination destined to end with the coatl leaving in a panic? hopefully the next stop would be better.
