Biography

BATHYPHYSA

Essence of the Deep

Bathyphysa, named for one of the many creatures she spends her time with in the Leviathan Trench, is truly the most powerful out of the trio of spirits that include her, her twin brother, and her adoptive younger brother. And this doesn't have anything to do with mystical powers- no. She is simply the most heartless out of the trio.

This terrifying oceanic spirit will not hesitate to drag a careless dragon down to her humble abode, where she lets them go, only to watch their lifeless body float back up to the top. And if they happen to survive the first bout, Bathyphysa will drag them back down right as they reach Pterios' realm and the sun lights an unreachable path for them. She will continue this unique torture until the dragon has been sent to the Tidelord for reckoning.

Though scarce as it is, Bathyphysa does have a kind-hearted side. Remember that younger brother? He was originally a victim of her terrifying tricks, but she noticed something was off when he didn't thrash about and scream for help- rather, he just stared at her, eyes wide with something other than fear. Eventually, she learned his story and granted him a spirit-like body and the title of 'Swamp Spirit'. So while her and Pterios reign over the deep and shallow waters around Terreneuvia respectively, the small fae's charge are the swamps and murky ponds that reside on the island.

~-~-~-~

The dark, murky waters of the deep enshrouded the mirror, making her nearly invisible as she slept- the only thing giving her away being the cobalt bauble on her head. It illuminated her face, as seaweed from a kelpie mane wound its way around her head and neck, despite the lack of currents this deep underwater. A seemingly lost angler fish bumped into the mirror, causing her eyes to open, revealing a strange site- two sets of magenta eyes.

She stood up and stretched out, relieving the aches caused by her slumber. Placing a claw on her hip, she let out a sigh of relief at the feel of her deep-sea trident. Running her claws through the seaweed tangle around her head, she allowed herself to get lost in thought.

Suddenly, a slight malicious grin spread over her face. Staring upward, she kicked off the ground and shot up, leaving a trail of sand and dirt in the water below her. For a mirror, she swam remarkably fast- the sun had reached her scales once again in a mere 15 minutes of swimming. Scanning the surface of the ocean, she kept a keen eye out for any new victims.

A tiny dark spot way above the mirror made itself apparent as it dove slightly underwater, revealing itself as a fae. The mirror began to slowly swim upwards, careful not to scare the poor thing.

Until a claw grabbed the end of her tail and yanked her back down. Lightning quick, she reached for her trident, ready to fight off any foes that posed a threat. Fortunately- or rather, unfortunately- it was just her nuisance of a brother, Pterois.
“Bathyphysa, are you going to hurt that poor fae?”

Bathyphysa looked away from her brother, a slight bit of shame creeping through her. “N-no.”

“Likely. Bathy, how many times have I told you to stop doing this? I never come to your section of the ocean and start killing off dragons, do I?”

“How many times have I told you how much I hate that nickname?” Bathyphysa dodged the question as she watched the fae, now almost invisible, swim away.

“Answer my question first, Bathy.”

“Fine. Never. But that’s only because there are no other dragons down there, and you yourself always complain about the sea creatures. Plus, you can’t stop me from coming up here- even if it’s just to see Morass.”

Pterois looked around, studying his surroundings, obviously thinking hard.

“Fine. You can come up here, but only to see Morass or enjoy the sun or whatever.”

“Now I’m going to go see our little brother, which is what I was going to do before you stopped me.”

“Yeah right! I saved that fae.” Pterois’ yelling faded into the background as Bathyphysa swam off, towards the island her adoptive brother lived on.

~-~-~-~

Bathyphysa startled awake as an anglerfish shot past her, leaving a tiny current in its wake as it continued on its swim. She huffed slightly in frustration as she watched it scurry away, now unsure if she’d gotten the right amount of sleep or not. Though after a sigh and a glance or two around, revealing literally nothing to do, she decided hanging out at the surface would be the best bet for her. So with a kick off of the ground, leaving pebbles and debris in her wake, she shot straight up and into her brother’s domain.

“Well, good morning to you too, Bathy.” Pterois groggily mumbled from a couple metres away. Bathyphysa’s woosh up to the surface must have awoken him.

The mirror tried not to scowl as she swam over to her brother. “What time is it?”

“Uh,” Pterois glanced up into the warping sky. “Just before dawn, I’d say.”

Bathyphysa followed his gaze, seeing a dark sky with a slight bit of purple erupting on one side. The whole thing was tinged with a dark blue and warped slightly as the ocean shifted above them.

“Mind if I stick around here for a while? I’ve always wanted to watch a sunrise.” Bathyphysa glanced back down to her brother. She’d seen tons of sunrises- she just didn’t want to miss Nemertea’s boat like last week. The fae made an effort to travel to Bathyphysa, instead of the other way around, once a week. The least she could do to reciprocate the favour would be to actually meet her at the boat.

Pterois smirked. They both knew why she was sticking around. “Sure, enjoy the sunrise, I guess.”

Bathyphysa rolled her eyes, though a smile lit up her face regardless. Perhaps her brother wasn’t that bad. Not all the time, anyways.

So the mirror waited, bobbing just above the surface of the water, watching as the sun slowly crept up the horizon. Finally, after seemingly hours of waiting and a full sunrise, the quiet hum of a boat alerted Bathyphysa to what she hoped was Riptide’s boat, Copper Shark.

She dove underneath the surface, close enough for a dragon looking for her bright pink eyes to find her, but too far for a single glance to locate. And there she waited. And waited. She’d forgotten how long it took for the Copper shark to arrive.

Finally, a large shadow fell over Bathyphysa, before pausing just long enough for a dragon to jump out of the boat. Out of instinct the mirror swam down a little more, though she kept her tell-tale eyes wide open so that Nemertea could find her.

“Bathy!” The fae grinned as she neared her mate. “It’s only been a couple days, but it’s so lonely back at Terreneuvia. Even with Driloleirus around- though I can’t say she’s really my favourite dragon. A little too violent, sometimes.”

Bathyphysa simply put a claw on her mate’s head and ruffled up her head fins. “Maybe I should come visit you more often, hm?”

Nemertea nodded in excitement. “I’d love for you to come live with me, but I know how much you love the ocean, and I wouldn’t want to take you away from that.”

The mirror turned and swam deeper into the ocean, in order to avoid Nemertea seeing her blush. The fae swam after her.

“Also, apparently Riptide knows about you. . . well, she doesn’t know you, per se, but she knows that I ride the Copper Shark out here to meet you.”

Bathyphysa stopped mid-stroke, the colour draining from her scales. “Is she going to tell your mom?”

While Anglerfish wasn’t exactly scary, the fae was older and far more experienced than Bathyphysa. And while she’d only ever seen Nemertea’s mother from far away, from what Nemertea had explained to her, meeting the leader of Terreneuvia wouldn’t exactly end well.

Sensing the mirror’s terror, Nemertea vehemently shook her head. “While Riptide’s mate, Seaweed, is particularly close to my mother, Riptide promised she wouldn’t tell a soul. So we- you, in particular- should be fine.”

The reasurment from Nemertea eased Bathyphysa slightly, though her kelpie mane still stood on end as the two travelled into the deep.

“Hey Nim, if anything happens to me, you know I love you, right?” The mirror said once they’d finally reached the ocean floor.

“Of course, Bathy.” Nemertea responded. “But you don’t have to worry about Anglerfish too much.” She added with a grin.

“I wasn’t. But now that you’ve mentioned it. . .” Bathyphysa glanced around in a feigned panic before tackling her mate to the ocean ground in a fit of laughter. After the wrestling subsided, the two lay there, staring up at the faint rays of sun fighting their way to the bottom of the ocean.

“I love you too.” Nemertea whispered.
