Amaterasu knew from an early age that she wanted to serve her deity. All that gave her pause was this burning question: how would she best do so? She spent weeks in quiet reflection, trying to decide. At a loss, she spoke at length to her father, the Clan historian, seeking guidance from tales of old. Perusing through anecdote and written records, together they came across stories of priests and priestesses, dedicated to the worship of a specific deity, serving both their clan and their deity through religious ceremony and prayer. At once Amaterasu knew that this was the role for her, and she set out to learn the ways of a priestess.
Since her return, she has served a central role in the clan. The clan is well-steeped in ritual and clan-wide ceremonies that all members participate in, and Amaterasu serves as the conductor of ceremony. She performs smaller rituals on a regular basis for her own worship or to seek favor from the Flamecaller on behalf of others. She does this through the burning of wood and incense, and the offering of runes, ores, and volcanic rock. She is often called upon to bless nests, newborns, the sick, and religious symbols such as fertility statues, as well as to present those individuals who are exalted. Amaterasu herself is a rather stern individual. She is incredibly devoted to the Flamecaller, is known to scold those who she feels do not adequately love her, and will outright lose her temper with those who pray to another deity. Unfortunately, she is not always skilled at keeping such feelings under wraps, and has been known to get caught up in confrontation with those in the clan who fit those categories. She is kind deep down, but her passion for her craft and deity cause her to behave otherwise. Other than when she feels her deity is threatened, she conducts herself with grace. Her rituals may be less than perfect--she tends to be a little clumsy--but it is said that she is well-favored by the Flamecaller, who speaks to her in dreams. |
