____________ Valente had lived many frosts and sired many children, and that was the way it went, on and on and on and on until the dragon could not stand it a moment longer. In the clear glass of the ice beyond the den, Valente faced the reflection of a stranger. The first problem was hard to pinpoint, but so clear looking back that Valente had felt silly for not noticing, especially after this long. The growing unease with motherhood was because Valente was simply not a mother at all. Antlers were grown out, and a new title was chosen at once. The second issue he tackled (he! The word sent a delighted little thrill down to his wingtips) was on who he kept close. Athos was an impeccably beautiful dragon; his soulful eyes and snowspeck-mane would have anyone vying to be his partner, even before counting how good he was to their children. But beauty and kindness do not create love alone. Valente's heart pained at the thought of him hurting, but Athos was ever the voice of support, just as he had always been. Some things had to be the way they were. The third and last was a kind of restlessness; the strange sense that the past some-years had been a sleepy sort of blur with little meaning or change. The fix for that was equally clear. All Valente had to do was change. So, he held close those of his children who had not left home even well after maturity, pressing a kiss to each of their heads, and left for lighter skies. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Valente was one of the first to befriend Kerkylas. The ever-sunny lands of the Lightweaver were kind to the Veilspun. The agreeable climate meant he didn't have to worry about going into torpor overnight, and the storied past the land's ancient structures possessed held a beauty Valente would never have experienced if he hadn't began his journey. |
