____________ Kerkylas was in a hunter's band for a very, very long time, but he is a scholar now. He doesn't like thinking of what it was like before. Harsh. Nasty. Unfair. A gross and thoughtless cycle. It had taken him far too long to come to Light territory despite his birth - prey preferred Shadow's cold veil and hidden cracks over the bare, vulnerable stretches of sun. But then he did come, and it was like waking up with icewater. Years of mindlessness - why? What could possess someone to live that way once they knew better? His pack left, which was no large loss. Kekylas was more disgusted with them by the hour. Did they have personalities, preferences, outside of combat style? He struggled to remember what differences he'd seen in them. Things got better. He'd had to catch up on the education he'd missed growing up, going through what he now recognizes as a slow ease out from madness. He scoured every inch of the Ruins as though attempting to physically hunt down the knowledge he craved, stalking up to the fringes of lectures and research parties and absorbing whatever information passed between them. The learning curve was steep; months passed with Kerkylas doing little more than loom over the bookish Light scholars (who were too absorbed in debates and crinkly old papers to notice). Once he'd asked his first question, though, his development came in leaps and bounds. The chewed-up pack dog was molded and tempered into a strict, tireless man of research. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - By the time he met them, Kerkylas's association with the Varley Company was a rare step back for him. He loathed anything that called to mind the brutish ways he'd born into, and the mercenaries' focus on grunt work and profits was something he couldn't take. He hated them, and he hated Aphos. He wasn't so stupid as to keep his peers from hiring the extra muscle for a long expedition, but a part of him - a small, illogical, teeny-tiny, barely existent little part of him - wanted to remind everyone that he'd kept up his physique for a reason. The reason: not having to deal with crass, greed-minded Tundras with control problems. Why anyone bothered to hire a mannerless, hateful little herbivore and her merry band of brutes was beyond him. Barking orders at the expedition party like they were unruly hatchlings - who was in charge of who, here? The other scholars may shy from confrontation for politeness' sake, but Kerkylas had no qualms in reminding them where their money was coming from. Truly. Not that a mercenary could ever understand sense. Of course Aphos would forget herself and throw a fit in a ruin whose historical significance was fit to crumble at the slightest breeze. Of course Kerkylas himself, the only one who seemed to give a whit about damages, would try to stop her from trampling an artifact that'd just caught his eye. Of course the Tundra's hindfoot and the Mirror's forepaw would touch the artifact at the same moment. They hadn't even realized it at first. But the moment Aphos jumped away and Kerkylas reeled back in disgust (foot, ew), it became terribly clear. Something wasn't letting them create that distance. As if they'd each hit a solid wall of air, neither could move more than three meters away from the other. |
