Kato had been born in Sorneith around the same time as Linnet. Yet they were raised in vastly different places. Linnet was born of Light, he wielded an immense power over light itself. Kato on the other hand was born in Shadow, was taught to use the shadows as a weapon. For many years the two Imperials had no knowledge of the other, learning and growing in their respectful flights. One thing they had in common though was the annual meteor showers they watched, separately yet together. Of course Kato's experience was a bit different as the Shadow flight actually celebrated the meteor showers, but that's beside the point. He always loved the displays the stars gave each year. So many colors that seemed to paint the dark skies for brief moments.
Since Kato's youngest years he has always joined the hunt for the fallen meteors. The joy of finding new treasures amongst the debris always rallied the hatchlings to help. You see, his most precious possession is the silver pocket watch he found at one of the meteor sites during his last meteor shower in Sornieth, before he crossed paths with a certain Light-born Imperial for the first time.
Linnet always snuck out at night during the week of the meteor showers. Light never celebrated them, no these were a Shadow and Ice ruled events. Some Light-born dragons even scoffed at the idea of celebrating the showers, always sayin the same thing.
"Why would we celebrate a few flashes of light once a year when we have the sun every day of the year?"
Linnet hated them for missing the beauty of the showers. One year he had been brave enough to venture just across the boarder between Light and Shadow to explore the site of a fallen meteor. After exploring the site he found a copper pocket watch and a shard of the meteor. Linnet left as soon as he heard approaching dragons from deeper in the territory. When he returned home he was greeted by his mother, she was angry yet she seemed to understand, to see something he couldn't. Linnet comes from a line of Temporal Rifter's, beings with power over time and space, he himself a young Time Lord. His fate has been written since birth.
Kato was in the forest of the Shadow flight hunting one morning when a blinding flash of light burst through the usually dark territory just a few miles from him. Having been trained to protect his clan he raced for that light to find the source. The closer he got to that light, the dimmer it seemed to glow. As he approach the line of trees between him and the glade the light just barely shone from, he slowed. When he emerged from the trees his heart stopped, for standing in the center of the glade stood the most beautiful being Kato had ever laid eyes on. That grey and gold Imperial lifted its head and eyes shinning with the purest of light met his own. His heart stumbled for a different reason as he saw the Imperials beautiful wings in shreds.
The screams ripped through the forest as Linnet's clan was attacked. They found him, the Organization came for him just as they hunt all Temporal Rifter's. Yet he was different, he could harness the raw power of light and it would be his demise. Tooth and claw he tore apart his enemies, bursts of light blinding those that threatened his clanmates, giving them time to run. This wasn't the first time they came for him and it wouldn't be the last. Linnet shot into the air trailed by his enemy. The first one lunged for his neck and was stopped with a swipe of his claws. As he turned, claws ripped through his left wing, his back being the intended target. His roar of pain swept through the forest as he connected with the ground. He knew he had to get up, he had to run before they reached him. Linnet slowly got his legs under him, growling as pain raced through his body. As his enemy approached he willed himself into a run. Faster, he had to go faster they were too close now, he had to get far away. As if his power understood his dire need to escape, he felt it surge and slash out ahead of him ripping the world ahead of him apart. A rift, he opened a rift in time and space. Without thinking he dove through and as the last tip of his tail sailed through behind him the rift snapped shut. Linnet's head spun as he laid in an familiarly dark forest for minutes or hours until he heard the rustle of leaves in front of him. As he lifted his head he met the deep purple eyes of the most magnificent Imperial to walk on this world. Cream colored spikes adorned its obsidian body. As if bathed in stars, points of light glistened of its wings and mane.
"You're wings", gasped the obsidian Imperial. Linnet twisted his head to inspect the damage. Sure enough his wings were in tatters and as if time resumed he felt the pain role down his wings again.
Kato watched as the Light-blessed Imperial studied his wings. What happened to this dragon? He felt inclined to help even if he was of a flight that detests his own. "My home is not far from here", he stated, "Those wounds should be cleaned and stitched." Those star like eyes met his again and the golden Imperial stood.
"I don't think your clan would allow me in", he muttered. Kato tilted his head slightly and replied, "Who said anything about a clan? I said my home, I live alone." The other Imperial studied him a moment and simply nodded. With that they were on their way and thus their fates had finally fallen into place.
Kato and Linnet became inseparable over the months they spent in Kato's home allowing Linnet's wings to fully heal and regain strength. As they learned of each others stories Kato had vowed to always protect Linnet. Soon enough the annual meteor showers returned and for the first time they spent them together. They sat atop a hill and shared stories of previous showers with each other. It was when they both revealed the pocket watches they had found at meteor sites, they realized that fate had meant for them to find each other for some reason.
For years they travelled through different worlds with the help of Linnet's power. Sometimes into the realm of humans and sometimes into the realms of other beasts. It was the first human world they arrived in that they realized they felt more than just friendliness for each other. Linnet's blonde hair and golden eyes complimented his tanned skin and Kato with his raven black hair and deep purple eyes that stood out from his moon white skin. After a few mishaps Kato took to either wearing contacts, sunglasses, or simply saying he wore contacts, even though he didn't, to hide the fact that his eyes stood out from the majority to much. Even when they were worlds away from Sornieth, they would always stop to watch the meteor showers, but none were ever as beautiful or as meaningful as those at home.
Catching a trickster in the midst of its trick is much easier than catching the spirit itself. It vanishes as soon as it's been spotted.
