Who am I?

I woke up in that ungodly place in a state of utter confusion. I knew nothing of who I was, and nothing of what got me there. I just knew something had gone horribly wrong and that I was not supposed to be there.

The plague dragons of the region, while initially hostile, sympathized with me, and helped me find my way home, but they, of course, were limited in how they could help me. I was nothing more than a clueless dragon with no clue who I even was, where was I supposed to have them take me? Recognizing me as a shadow dragon, they figured they might as well drop me off in the Foxfire Bramble, and while the place did seem vaguely familiar to me, I had no idea where I was going from there.

Then of course, I was dealing with this thing growing out of the left of my neck. Apparently Aberrations like me tend to have two heads that fight for control. This guy must have missed the memo. Lefty here is nothing more than dead weight. A parasite that lives off of me with no real capabilities of its own. Most of the time it just hangs down. And on the rare occasion where it lifts its head, it does nothing more than stare blankly, muttering incomprehensible nonsense noise. Just looking at the damn thing is enough to fill me with rage.

The more time I spent in the Shadowbinder's domain, the more I began to realize that I didn't belong. I'd walk down roads only for passing dragons to stare at me in shock, only to avoid eye contact if I looked their way. I don't know how to describe it, but the whole place brought bad feelings in me. Like I wouldn't belong, regardless if I was this monstrosity or not. So I left the place and decided to live as a nomad.

In my travels, I found someone. A small Fae named Silvia. Or rather, perhaps she found me. Something about evoked a strange mix of emotions in me. Her name, her voice, the way she looked into my eyes, it was like we had known one another before, but I had no way to know. I explained to her my situation, and she offered me a home in her village. Deciding the nomadic lifestyle wasn't right for me, I took her up on that offer, and I was taken to this village known as Moonlight Falls.

The village's serene beauty was something that brought tears to my eyes. It felt so familiar. While I couldn't remember a thing about this place, it just felt like home. The sound of the flowing waterfall. The smiles of the dragon residents. I had to have been here before, but whatever experience I may have had with this place eluded me.

"We're very happy to have you here, Aka!" one particularly friendly Spiral said as she greeted me.

Apparently she likes to give all the dragons of the village nicknames, and that was what she decided to call me. Though I don't know my true name, and the name Aka didn't bring back any memories, I was comfortable going by that name for now.

That night I settled in, feeling hopeful. If the life of who I was before was a puzzle, this was the first piece I was able to connect. I knew that this place had to be the place where I will find myself once again.

But of course, that feeling disappeared almost as soon as it arrived.

The next morning, I woke up in a field, feeling sick to my stomach. What the hell happened to me?. I spoke with the other dragons for information, and what they told me made my heart sink to my stomach.

I was horrified to learn that I didn't do anything, but as soon as I fell asleep, my left head was up and bumbling through the town. It spent the entire night bumping into buildings, tripping over its own feet, making eyes at the Snapper in the gardens, and finally, gorging itself with so much food until it passed out in the middle of the field I woke up in. And the whole time, it didn't utter a single word. It just kept walking and plowing its way through the village.

Well that's just wonderful. Now this guy's a whole other problem I have to deal with.

And I was as embarrassed as I was shocked. Before these dragons even knew what name to call me, they're first impression of me is someone who can't keep his own body under control. But just as I was about to lock myself in my house in shame, Cyprus, the town's egghead Obelisk, urged me to come out and hear his thoughts on the matter.

shadowmid2.png

"Breed changes are nothing out of the ordinary here in the world of Sornieth. I know you don't know who you used to be, but by any chance, do you think you were always an Aberration?"

That question stuck in my head. Having another head stuck to my body didn't feel natural. Surely that shouldn't be normal for an Aberration, is it?

"I— I really don't know. Though it could be possible."

Cyprus smiled and leaned in. "Aberrations may be new to the modern world, and what little we've been able to see of them so far has been wildly inconsistent. Of course, a dragon with a single brain splitting into 2 is bound to cause some sort of complications."

I felt my left head lift itself up for a moment, only to drop back down and hang limp again. My heart began to race as the Obelisk opened up a world of possibilities for me. A brain split in two? All this time I never thought as my left head as anything more than a parasite. But could it be the key to knowing my past? Are all my memories in there, locked within a head that can't get a word out to save its life?

"Are you implying that my left head might know who I used to be?"

"It's a real possibility. Of course, without any proper experimentation, we can't know for sure, but if you're up to it, I'm already brainstorming some experiments we can do to poke around in that second head of yours."

I stood there, overwhelmed by the possibilities. "Cyprus. Thank you so much. You have no idea how much this means to me."

The Obelisk gave a friendly smile. "Wonderful! I'll let you know when I figure something out. This is going to be very interesting."

Though I still don't know who I am, the prospect that was laid out in front of me kept me excited. I have no idea if he'll be able to help or not, but regardless, this conversation alone opened my eyes. Of course, I still have the problem of needing to keep my second head in check, but for the first time since I woke up next to the Wyrmwound, I had a sense of direction. I had a calling, and I was determined to see it through. My true identity is still something I long for, but for now, I am Aka. And that's good enough for the time being.
